Tolroy Manor, Hayle: Sufficient for a place to sleep and rest

by ara2

I went to Tolroy Manor with very low expectation, hence my stay had far surpassed my expectation.

Good location, close to Hayle town and all the other touristy places eg land's end, cape cornwall, lizard, st michael manor etc and has many shops and other amenities. However, a car is definitely needed.

Check in process was a breeze, everything have been prepared beforehand, took less than 5 minutes. Off course I check in after 4 pm, as required by Tolroy Manor.

The cottage is clean, all the amenities were there - crockeries etc. We decided to bring our own linen to cut cost, so these are not prepared by tolroy manor. What I could suggest are for the management to provide kitchen/ tea towel or oven mitt to avoid burning our hands taking out food from the oven. No dishwasher liquid and cloth/sponge, so you will need to bring this yourself. Only one roll of toilet tissue provided, as well as 1 garbage bag. I don't now if we could as this from the reception. We didn't bother as we only stayed for 2 nights, just bought toilet tissues on our way back from sightseeing.

There were 3 bedrooms, 1 twin, 1 double and 1 bunk-bed. The quality of mattresses are varied. They are quite hard, not for everyone preference but I slept through it no problem. My friend in the twin room reported that his mattress/bed 'move' giving him slight moving sickness in the morning. If we stay longer I may ask for mew mattress/bed but I just felt that we don't have time to report and wait for the replacement as our time was very tight.

The bathroom/toilet is clean, hot water available 24 hours. It is good if they provide extra bathmat as the only one provided got quite wet towards the end. There is no mop provided to dry up the floor. No toiletteries provided for anyone interested to know. Have no problem because I know this beforehand and brought my own.

Portable heater provided in every room. Vacuum cleaner, iron and ironing board are provided. there is also a small tv with good reception sans remote control. I read somewhere that you could ask it from reception but i didn't try. We didnt try their outdoor and indoor facilities nor attending the show, so can't comment on that.

Check out was a breeze again, just drop the key at the reception and we are done!

All in all, not too bad for less than £50...so good considering other totally negative review we have here.

They have pools and other sports facilities. I believe they have child programme during the night too.

Hathaway Guesthouse: A Guesthouse with a View

by King_Golo

Hathaway Guesthouse has got an enviable location. It was built on Roscarrock Hill with an unobstructable view on the lovely village of Port Isaac. Three of its four bedrooms offer this view, and I can hardly think of a more beautiful panorama to see once you open the curtains. The B&B is clean, its owners Marion and Nigel are friendly, albeit perhaps a little too professional. The breakfast is good as well. With the Coast Path passing just in front of the house, the location is not only good for its view but also if you are into hiking.
Its premier location is also its major drawback. A very narrow road leads up to the house, and if you come by car you have to be very careful entering the road as that is its narrowest point. Moreover, most satnavs and Googlemaps offer wrong directions which will make you end up in a cul-de-sac on a 15% pitch with no possibility to turn! Our car ended up there and it was only with the help of a friendly man who lives on that road that we managed to get it out again. Scratches on both sides will remain forever, but at least the clutch survived... What you MUST do instead is to go down Back Hill instead of Trewetha Lane and Rose Hill.

Hollow Tree House: A Nice B&B in the World's Sleepiest Town

by King_Golo

The Hollow Tree House is a friendly and super-clean B&B in the sleepy hillside town of Helston. It has got comfortable rooms, the breakfast (whether Full English or Continental) is delicious, and the hosts are friendly. Marjorie and Peter will do everything to make your stay a success - they even sang "Happy Birthday" for my wife's birthday!

The B&B is approximately 400m away from Helston's centre. It makes a good starting point for excursions on the Lizard and Penwith Peninsulas as neither is too far away. However, Helston itself is very sleepy - there is literally nothing going on. If you prefer a more active place you should probably go to Penzance or St. Ives.

Cleanliness - I've never before seen a cleaner B&B!

Pendragon Country House: North Cornwall luxury inn

by tvor

The Pendragon is probably one of the nicest places I've ever stayed anywhere! It's a country house hotel just outside Camelford, in north Cornwall next to the Bodmin Moor and a short drive from Tintagel and Boscastle. The house used to be a vicarage and is owned by Sharon and Nigel Reed. It's billed as a luxury hotel and it certainly was. The Reeds take good care of you and you will most definitely have a comfortable and enjoyable stay.

The rooms and the house are all furnished in antiques. The bathrooms have heated floors and towel racks. There are double, king, twin and a single room and there is a twin room on the ground floor. There is a lovely and comfortable room with the bar and stereo. The bar is an honesty bar, you write down what you drink and it will be added to your bill. There is also another sitting room with a fireplace to lounge as well. The house has free wi-fi with a security code though we did have some difficulty connecting with our iPods. Our room was the furthest from the hub so that may have been the problem. They also have a basement room with a games console and a small pool table which we used one night.

The toiletries are locally produced and as much of the food as possible is also locally sourced. The rooms have flat screen tvs with a dvd player built in and of course a tea tray. The linens are all top quality and they also provide bathrobes. There's a fridge outside the room that you can use and they provide fresh milk for the tea and coffee in it. They will accept a dog in the ground floor room for a small charge.

All of the rooms are named after Arthurian characters. Ours was Lamorak. Single/double/twin rooms are £42 - 50 PP per night and king rooms are 50 - 65 pp/pn. You get a 10% discount with 3 nights or more. Very reasonable for this wonderful country inn with the outstanding service and breakfast. They will do a packed lunch for you on request.

Breakfast is incredible, with a menu to choose from, everything impeccably cooked and presented. Omelettes, Rarebit, full Cornish breakfast, or a lighter breakfast if you want. You can have special needs accommodated and if you're lucky, they'll do evening meals as well and if you to partake, your palatte will thank you! The website says they do evening meals most nights but we were there during the construction so they were a bit at sixes and sevens and we were the only guests on our third night. Nigel is a wonderful chef and Sharon does all the baking. When we were there, we ate in the dining room but they've just added on a new extension as a dining room that can hold a larger group of people as they also cater for functions.

I would most definitely stay here again and would recommend it highly. Find it on the A395, just off the A39 a couple of miles north of Camelford. They are only a mile or so up the road. Watch for the Green sign on the road at the driveway.

Free wifi, games room, Honesty bar. They will pack a lunch for you on request if you are picnicking.
10% discount booking for 3 or 4 nights, 15% 5 nights or more.

Warm Welcome Hotels: Luxury Hotels Dartmoor

by robinroodenburg

A WARM WELCOME AWAITS

There are many fine hotels in Devon but two in particular stand out from all the rest for a number of reasons, not least of which is the warmth of the welcome awaiting you and the impressive diversity of the leisure breaks on offer. I, of course, refer to the two hotels in the WarmWelcomeHotels stable; namely The Bedford Hotel in the historic market town of Tavistock and the Two Bridges Hotel nestling at the heart of the Dartmoor National Park.

There’s the relaxation of a Painting Break, the suspense of a Murder Mystery weekend, the beauty of an historic Gardens Tour, and the taste of Strictly Come Dancing; it’s all here for you to enjoy but, don’t worry, in the unlikely event that none of these fit the bill, there’s always the ever popular Golfing Break to look forward to.

Stunning views, award winning food, spacious modern bedrooms with every amenity, this is Devon accommodation to rival the cream of luxury hotels in the UK; truly a taste of Devon luxury at its best, to be savoured and enjoyed year after year.

After a busy day spent in the pursuit of your chosen activity, or perhaps exploring all that the local area has to offer, sit back, relax and enjoy a Devon cream tea in a comfortably furnished lounge, or a restorative drink in the well-stocked bar before sampling the mouth watering delights of the daily changing menu in a tranquil and elegant restaurant. Here the chef will prepare your dinner to order, using only fresh and locally sourced ingredients.

There are many hotels in England that justly deserve the praise they receive and The Bedford and Two Bridges Hotels are certainly amongst them. However, few can rival that unbeatable combination of outstanding hospitality, first class comfort and unparalleled natural beauty. When you next visit Devon, hunt out these jewels in the crown, www.warm-welcome-hotels.co.uk unless, of course, you’re coming back for more…and who could blame you?

So, whether it’s for a short break, or a longer stay, holidays in Devon have never been better.

Treloyhan Manor Hotel: Top Hotel In St.Ives

by robinroodenburg

FUN AND FELLOWSHIP FOR ALL

“A haven of tranquillity”

This is the opinion of a recent guest who stayed at the ‘”lovely old manor house” with “lots of character”. It admirably captures the essence of this beautiful hotel run by the Christian Guild. This multi-denominational holiday company has five impressive hotels in its stable and Treloyhan Manor is one of them, offering the perfect holiday accommodation for everyone seeking to enjoy a break with a Christian flavour; an opportunity that is almost unique amongst UK hotels.

Standing in a magnificent position overlooking Carbis Bay, on the edge of the picturesque seaside town of St. Ives in Cornwall, this comfortable and unique haven of peace and tranquillity is the embodiment of genuine Cornwall hospitality; an experience to be savoured and enjoyed year after year.

All the forty-two bedrooms are comfortably appointed and range from single occupancy – refreshingly at no extra charge! – to family rooms suitable for up to five people and the west-facing sea views are simply breathtaking. The extensive gardens enjoy the benefit of the mild all year Gulf Stream climate and provide the perfect environment for fun and fellowship for all the family, or alternatively the opportunity for quiet reflection amidst the wonders of nature.

The area itself boasts a whole host of year-round activities with majestic coastal walks, beautiful beaches, art galleries, museums and a strong sense of local history. The Tate St Ives, Eden Project, Land’s End and St Michael’s Mount, to name but a few, are also easily reached by car, but don’t worry if you prefer to not to venture far, there is always an exciting range of both indoor and outdoor activities available for a fantastic holiday in St. Ives.

There are many hotels that justly deserve the praise they receive and Treloyhan Manor is certainly one of them. However, few can rival that unbeatable combination of outstanding hospitality, first class comfort and unparalleled natural beauty at very affordable prices – kids can even stay completely free at certain times of the year!

So, when you are next seeking a holiday in Cornwall, hunt out this jewel in the crown, unless, of course, you’re coming back for more…and who could blame you?

Whether it’s for a short break, or longer stay, Treloyhan Manor is the perfect choice for a hotel in St. Ives…in fact, holidays in Cornwall have seldom been better.

12 New Street, Padstow: Padstow holiday house

by edachsund

I went down to Padstow on May 2009 during my visit to the UK. Stayed in this holiday family house at No. 12 New Street, Padstow. I was not expecting Padstow has such a lovely holiday getaway which alot has to offer therefore, I have wandering around the area, checking out the ancient town where it use to be a fishing port and yet I guess fishing activities were still actively run despite the main business attraction I would have presume a tourism. From my observation, Padstow was attracted mostly to a local tourist.

12 New Street, were located 2 min walk to the harbour where you can get a local made pastie. It's central, about 5 min drive to TESCO too. I went to TESCO to get some fresh food for the barbeque.

Basically, the accommodation were a three storey family house in the conservation area of Padstow. It is ideal for large family parties this delightful home, has a lovely large kitchen/diner, a second sitting room with views over the rooftops to the estuary and a small patio garden which benefits from sunshine most of the day. In the evenings the sitting room at the top of the house is great for adults to chill out with a glass of wine while the children watch t.v. in the lounge.

You can get intouch with this lovely couple Anne and Roland Hogg for more info, oh I did put the website for direct booking as well.

I certainly will come back again maybe this year.

Thurlestone Guest House: 4 star but should be 5 star!

by Jenniflower

Having stayed at many B&Bs and guest houses over the years, I have to say this is one of the nicest of all, and by far, the friendliest and most helpful. Nothing is too much to ask for, the hosts, Mandy and Gary, take time out to chat and get to know you, they phone and make reservations at restaurants for you, even calling for a taxi! They have a decidedly good knowledge of the area and it's attractions.

Breakfasts were lovely, we had an English breakfast mostly, having the scrambled egg with salmon once, which was tasty, but we preferred the fry-up. All the usual condiments - marmalade and a variety of jams, tea, coffee, yoghurts, cereals etc. were there for the eating. Butter is Cornish, which was lovely - I always appreciate it when a business owner makes good use of the local produce, supporting local business. Their daughter helps out with serving the breakfast, which only adds to the welcoming family feel.

At the end of a bustling day we had the comfort of a glass of Bailey's, cheerfully made by one of our hosts. Nothing is too much for them, their aim is to make your stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible... and they succeed. They haven't been running it very long (a couple of years), and to have achieved what they have already is outstanding in my opinion.

The location is great. It is on a convenient road which takes you straight into St Ives. It is 5 minutes from the beach (Carbis Beach), and about a half an hour enjoyable coastal walk away from St Ives. There is a shop next door for any goodies you might need: toothpaste, newspaper, cooldrinks etc. It is sea facing.

At Thurlestone Guest House you are staying in a typically Cornish granite house, which was built in 1845. The deep windows and thick walls are evidence of this. I love this kind of history and character, and this, combined with some modern amenities like a flat screened TV and tasteful decor, are exactly what's needed after a long drive (6 hours!).

*It is not suitable for disabled people.

**Please have a look at the more indepth tip on my Carbis Bay travel page. Please do not rate both. Thanks
