Hendra Holiday park threats

Bad (2.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on August 1, 2014

So I awoke at 1.30 in the afternoon having packed up 2 nights early and driven through the night back to our home in the East Midlands to ensure our family could get a safe night's sleep. The previous day, after being out all day then dropping the kids and 2 dogs with their grandma camping on Pine field we headed out for some groceries at the nearby supermarket. We returned to be almost assaulted by the "gentleman" on the neighbouring pitch; a large man who had been drinking all day. It then transpired that whilst we were gone he had also launched himself at my mother-in-law threatening extreme physical harm to her and our pets with the use of much profanity. She is 66 years old and a petite 4'11" and having been afraid to approach a rowdy group who had been drinking all day had asked the park to intervene politely to ensure that their table was moved from the centre of the access road back into their pitch so we could get in and park the car at the side of our tent within our allocated pitch. This request was apparently enough to warrant his threats of death and violence to multiple members of my family. Our kids aged 12,13 and 19 were present and witnessed all of this becoming understandably traumatized. Of course the camp security were called and on being told that we were going to phone the police we were informed that (thankfully) they were already on their way. The general manager was also in attendance. Since the assailant was obviously very drunk he was breathalysed by the police officers and found unable to drive, therefore he "could not be evicted from the park" because they apparently had a "duty of care" to him, or to wherever they placed him (not seemingly for our safety though). As far as we are aware there was "nothing that could be done until he actually harmed one of us" (very reassuring). The general manager arranged for them to be housed in a caravan on a different part of the site overnight with a security guard in attendance but with no authority to prevent him from leaving it if he wanted to. When we pointed this out and said that it really didn't make us any safer he had the gall to whine that he was giving up an [empty] caravan for the night to "diffuse the situation" and that he could do nothing more. We ate with our friends, packed up and left at midnight with the youngest in shock and the older kids afraid to even walk 50 yards to the toilet block alone.
The following day we received a telephone call from the park manager who was evidently not aware of the situation or the issues leading up to the flashpoint events of the day before. I suggested he check his records and get back to us. He has said he will do just that and we await further contact. I expect there will be some soothing response from the customer service representative paid to troll websites for adverse reviews telling us of Hendra's general policies and their zero tolerance attitude to antisocial behaviour. This response is unnecessary since we can and have read the handbook and the policies are not worth the glossy brochure they are written on. The reality of the situation is that requests were either not appropriately communicated to management or security, ignored or downplayed and the resulting flashpoint nearly resulted in an assault on a pensioner in front of her grandchildren by a drunken antisocial thug.
Thank you Hendra for a family holiday we will never forget.
