  • England's worst hostel

    by

I urge you not to waste your money at St Christopher's Inn. This place is truly awful.

Sadly, the absolute lowlight for me was in fact the staff; they were rude, sarcastic, abnoxous and generally unhelpful.

The bar is fine, if you enjoy paying enormous sums of money for drinks or bad food and you don't mind sharing the place with a collection of local tramps and the staff, who treat the place like their own living room.

The view is genuinely wonderful, but best enjoyed at another establishment and really is the only good thing going at this place.

Bedsheets were stained and the showers were blocked.

It's great that they have an inclusive continental breakfast, but not so good when you find out that this is a selection of cheap bread to toast, bad cereal and tea/coffee.

I would only recommend staying here if you are curious to see what it's like to live in a South American prison.

Unique Quality: The power to abhorr.

Directions: Find it on a map as the staff won't help you.

    St. Christopher Inn (Newquay)

    by

Very affordable lodging nestled right above the cliff walls of Newquay overlooking the bay onto Towan Beach. A popular hotspot for surfers near and far, this hostel is the right place for festivities and parties. Perfect location for foot and backpacker travel, its just down the road from nearby Tintagel Castle - the legendary home of Merlin the Magician, Uther Pendragon, King Arthur, and the Knights of the Round Table. The hostel is located in and above the Belushi's bar - a bustling place that might confuse you as if you're in a pirate pub or a sports bar. Secured access and separation from the bar upstairs to the lodging, the place has free internet, and a couple of internet kiosks. No kitchen or facilities for the backpackers, the food is discounted below in the bar. No extra storage for your bags is a downer, but the rooms are safe electronic key access. The dorm room I had overlooked the bay with spectacular views. Rating: 4 stars out of 5.

  • Hostel on the Beach

    by

I stayed here because it was a stopping point for the backpacker tour I was traveling with. The amenities and cleanliness are about average--however, I don't remember this place having a kitchen to cook your own food; it's the location that is the best thing about the place. There is a bar (Belushi's) on the ground floor, which probably creates some noise, but, as I was on holiday, I was one of the people contributing to the noise, instead of trying to fight it. Although, as a regular backpacker, you may have to deal with the backpacker tours people coming through during the summer. If you aren't too fussy, can be a great place to spend the night.

Unique Quality: The hostel is right on the beach. The bar has outside seating, where you can have a beer or a meal overlooking Towan Beach. If Belushi's isn't all you want it to be, there is a nightclub a hop, skip, and a jump away (also right along the beach).

    Newquays 'so so' hostel

    by

St Christophers seemed like a perfect choice to relax in February. I had just returned from staying in budget accommodation in Australia...and i missed it!
For the price (off-season) of £13 a night, it seemed quite reasonable as it came with breakfast.
Check in was easy, the reception guy was easy to talk to and knew the area very well.
I was somewhat let down with my room. Only one main light. Which had the hostel been full could have been very irratating. I had a 8bed dorm to myself with views of Towan Beach.
The beds were comfortable, but quite small. I found i had to hang my legs out the side! The duvets supplied were too small for the bed also.
    The rooms lack natural light.
Another not so good point is that there is only one shower/bathroom per floor!, so with say 24 guests waiting for the shower its not good. I should imagine its near hell in the summer.
I can't complain about my nights sleep and the location.

Breakfast was somewhat of a let down also. They struggled to put enough bread and tea out for 6 people!
All in all, its not quite worth the money. But im used to paying £7 a night and getting good hostel accommodation...

    Unique Quality: good check in.
good location, right in the heart of newquay.

Directions: located in the centre of newquay, near walkabout and towan beach
