Nice Bar, Awful hotel
by TripAdvisor Member LittleMissSmith
This hotel is one of the worst I have ever stayed in. Reception were rude, the rooms were tiny and dirty, and at £110 per night I was disgusted, plus they add a sneaky £4 per person as “Insurance” even though you have your own – check the small print with this hotel. We arrived just after 12 and were told the rooms weren’t ready which is fine although I wasn’t expecting to be told I couldn’t leave my luggage, at a 4 star hotel. I said we would go for lunch and be back later, and when we arrived back we were told the room just needed to be checked so we said we would wait in the bar. The Bar is very modern and clean and the staff very friendly- a precedent not upheld by the rest of the establishment. We waited 2 and half hours for this check to take place. We were the ONLY ones waiting for our rooms – why the Checker could not have checked the ones we were allocated instead of the rest of the hotel first I don’t know – where is the concept of customer satisfaction and service in making people wait as long as possible. The reception staff were rolling their eyes as I approached after 2 hours !! Finally, the rooms were ready -the website lets you choose which floor you would like which I thought was a nice idea, until I questioned the fact that I was not on that floor and was told they don’t check that – why have it then ?!! We then got up to a room that was so tiny you could only just walk around the bed sideways – if you pulled the stool out for the dressing table the whole room was blocked. There were stains all up the walls and a dirty cloth left on the dressing table – so much for a 2.5 hour check ! When I complained to reception they told me it was a 45 minute wait for another room – it was 4pm by this time – how can the rooms not be ready. Plus what amazes me is on the second day, the room had been cleaned by the time we came back from our in-edible breakfast – so why does it take so long to get people checked in!!?. We didn’t even bother with the breakfast after the first day – I’d rather eat sand. Infact you’d be better off kipping on the beach than spending your hard earned cash in this hotel.
Yuk!!!!!

Reception staff have no idea of customer service. Bar service OK. Bar views nice. Room view was a wall. Windows kept closed due to vent noices. Rooms very very small and also dirty, spashes on walls etc. Walls very thin. Headboard bangs when people walk in corridors. Did not change rooms as would be waiting all afternoon. Breakfasts disgusting (went out for them after day 1). Car park can fill so be prepared to park elsewhere. Not 4-star (more like a 2-star). Not value for money. Does not match expectations of web site. Will not return. Probably the worst service in a hotel I have stopped at.
The Bay Hotel and Fistral Spa, Newquay
by TripAdvisor Member TauntonLaura
All in all The Bay Hotel is good value. Located at the far end of Fistral Beach, the hotel is close enough to the town to walk but can distance itself from the summer hordes.
Fantastic views and funky decor in the bar make for a striking contrast to the basic rooms which although clean are basic and small. Rooms are stocked with towels, hairdryers and tea and coffee.
The Fistral Spa is the crowing glory for this hotel. The pool, jaccuzzi, steam and sauna on the ground floor and the gym on the top floor are all free to hotel guests. Additional treatments are booked at reception and are all chargable.
Staff are friendly and helpful.
Ongoing building work around the hotel starts throughout the week at 8am so don't expect a lie in !
We stayed at The Bay Hotel at the start of June 2007.
Great hotel, great service

Me and my partner stayed at The Bay Hotel over the "Run to the Sun" weekend. After a busy day in the centre of Newquay we were greatful for a peaceful hotel to stay in! Views from the hotel were lovely!
Newquay centre is with in walking distance but not close enough to be disturbed.
The hotel was clean and tidy with very friendly anf polite staff, especially the reception who couldn't do enough for us even though they were busy.
Staff had great knowledge of the area which was helpful!
The new spa was amazing and very relaxing.
Will definatley visit again and recommend to friends!
Pleasantly Surprised

I travel a lot on business so I always check tripadvisor before I book a hotel and I must admit reading some of the reviews I did have some concern when booking The Bay. I chose the hotel in the end as the website looked good and it had a newly opened Spa.
I haven't written a review before but after reading the prevoius reviews I felt I had too.
The hotel itself is 3* and on entering was pleasantly suprised by its newly refurbished, contemporary public area's.
On checking in I was greeted with a friendly hello from the receptionists who dealt with our check in in a proffessional way, providing me with all the information I needed for my stay and they seemed well trained in promoting the Hotel and Spa.
My room was a single non sea view room. Although not a large room it was clean and had all the necessaties for my stay. I was not disappointed in booking a non sea view room as the amazing view from the bar made up for it. If I didn't have to work I could have stayed watching the view all day!
I chose to eat in the Bay Bar and again the staff were friendly and forthcoming, even coming up to me to ask if i'd like another drink which I thought was a nice touch. Again at breakfast, a fairly good standard 3* hotel affair, I was welcomed by the waitress with a friendly smile.
I only stayed for two nights and didn't have time to book any treatments but I did use the pool facilities which were excellent, especially the little touches such as towels in the lockers.
In summary, I will definately stay again when I am next in Cornwall and maybe even book a treatment or two!
Fantastic Hotel & Spa

Surprised to see some of the reviews on here as we had a brilliant time!
Spent the afternoon surfing, the evening drinking and the mornings in the spa - what could be better??????!!!
The room was comfortable and clean and the staff helpful and friendly.
The food in the bar is lovely - its got a good mix of things that should cater to all tastes.
We really enjoyed it and couldn't recommend it more highly.
p.s You must try the body massage in the Spa - its amazing.
Spa great! Room not so good.....

My boyfriend booked the Chill in and Check Out deal at the Bay Hotel for my birthday this weekend. The deal itself was very good value for money but the room was a let down.
When arriving at the hotel I was very impressed, the reception, bar area/restaurant was very modern and clean looking. The staff were a bit slow and didn't really seem to know what they were doing but we got check in eventually! Before we went to our room we were shown around the Spa area, I think they are very proud to show off the new parts, again I was very impressed and excited to see what our room was like if first appearances was anything to go by. But the girl showing us around quickly mentioned that the rooms hadn't been updated with the rest of the hotel but were nice, so at this point I was quite excited to see the room still.
The Room, what can I say......dreadful! We had a double room which was tiny, and paid £20 extra for a balcony which had beautiful views over looking Fistral Beach, view/balcony I can not complain about but the room wasn't good. Felt like I'd stepped back into the 70's with the decor, and the smell of old smoke was awful! Everything smelt of smoke, even down to the pillows and bedding! The bed was the most uncomfortable and smallest double I've ever slept on, the bathroom was clean and basic but still needed up dating. The walls/radiators were yellow with nicotine stains. When I asked one of the maids if they had non smoking rooms I was advised all rooms were smoking which I feel is very unfair for non smokers.
After a long 5 hour drive we wanted to take a quick nap before looking around the area, while we were sleeping I was woken up by the sound of someone coming into the room, when I went to open the door it was another hotel guest that had just checked in and had been given the same room as us!
The evening meal was ok, it was a 3 course set menu and you could tell everything had bee pre cooked and waiting on hot plates to bring out. Our starters appeared so quickly after we ordered we were still waiting for the wine from the bar! Food was ok, nothing special.
Breakfast was nice n fresh. Good views if you get a table by the windows.
The spa was gorgeous, very modern, clean and good facilities. Treatments and Relaxation room were very good as well.
I would recommend this hotel for the Spa only, I would advise staying in another hotel over night. This hotel could be fantastic, great location for the beach and facilities are lovely, at the moment the rooms let this hotel down and until they update them I won't be returning.
Really good break

We just stayed at The Bay Hotel last weekend and I must say we really enjoyed it. We found it above our expectations, nice, clean and refurbished to a high standard for a 3 star hotel, the staff were very polite and attentive. But what we enjoyed the most was the spa! As the weather wasn't very nice we used the facilities quite a lot. After breakfast we went to town both mornings but then in the afternoon we stayed in and use the pool area which is impressive, lots of little details, such as twinkling lights on the ceiling, that makes it very relaxing. We booked a couple of treatments one afternoon and I would totally reccommend it, after that you feel brand new and really pampered. The deco is beautiful, really well done.
We'll book again. Definately!!!
Unique! Looking forward to returning!

Stayed last summer and can not wait to get back to see what new and exciting development has made this hotel even more unique. It is hard to find a hotel outside of London that has a unique design, obviously professionally done. The owners obviously see sense that a spa hotel set on the stunning fistral beach is just what newquay needs to up the standard! I thoroughly recommend the luxury facial with oriental head massage, and the food in both the bar & restaurant is fresh, professionally prepared and delicious!
Some of these reviews are WRONG !

I'm sorry, I must say that some of the critiques on here about the Bay Hotel do not make any sense at all, the Bay Hotel is BRILLIANT !
My family and I have travelled all over the world and we know Newquay very well, having stayed in many hotels in the area, I can honestly say that the Bay Hotel is THE VERY BEST.
The friendly service from all staff is second to none and the standard of accommodation is excellent, it is clean, well decorated and up to date.
I have been back several times (since my first visit in 2004) and will continue to go back and stay at the Bay Hotel, don't listen to the minority of silly comments & reviews on here.
Go to the Bay, and enjoy your stay.
