Beachfield Hotel - a cosy Victorian style hotel

Great (4.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on July 13, 2009

The Beachfield Hotel is a cosy white Victorian style building facing the Penzance promenade. Located on the sea front, our hotel offers breathtaking panoramic views of Mounts Bay, from The Lizard to Newlyn Harbour. A Victorian building, dating from the 1860s and standing on grounds that were once fields and dunes where fishermen dried their nets, the Beachfield Hotel has long been a favourite for those who know Penzance well. It is conveniently only a six-minute walk from the historic town centre.

Unique Quality: I liked the dining room where a hearty full English breakfast is being served daily. It faces the promenade and has wonderful sea views. The interior of the lobby is tastefully decorated with sofas and a fireplace where one can spend the quiet evening reading a book. The hotel does not have an elevator so you have to carry your luggage up the staircase.

Directions: About 20 minutes walk from Penzance station.

My advice would be if you are a single traveller ask for a Sea View Room. Note Room 8 very small due to having a double bed. Not really required, if you are a single traveller. This room would have been better with a single bed – this would give the room more space.

Bed could have been more comfortable, due to the springs sticking up in the mattress. Also the sheets were not changed for week room and the room was not vacuumed for a week. I had to return what should have been clean towels to reception and request a new set due to the towels looking like they had been used to clean a bike chain.

The bathroom area – again this room very small and the toilet far too close to the shower. No towel rail to hang your bath towels on when they are damp.

I only had one main meal in the evening, didn’t have a lot of vegetarian options.
Breakfast was generally the same you get at most hotels, but cereals would have been better in individual boxes rather than from dispensers.

I was very disappointed due to an incident occurring with a loss of money from my room. This I reported, due to the fact I had locked my door before going to breakfast. A word of warning, always take your bags with you to breakfast. I noticed one morning that breakfast room was full and no one had bags with them. I did due to the loss of money on the first morning of my stay. Not a good start to a holiday I was looking forward to.

Idea location for Train Station and Bus Station, but if you wish to get an early train or bus it is better to walk to either station. Note about a 15 minute walk, longer if less able.

The overall internal appearance is very elegant, this hotel had been revamped. It looked more presentable than the Queens Hotel further down the road.

Penzance is ideal as a base, to start exploring further: St Michaels Mount Marazion, Land’s End, St Ives, Porthcurno, Helston, Mousehole, and Newlyn are all within easy reaching distances from Penzance.
