More about Primrose Valley Hotel
6th year spent at Primrose Valley Hotel, St Ives - Cornwall
by TripAdvisor Member NottinghamTango
We have spent 6 wonderful years at the Primrose Valley Hotel, St Ives and even had a very intimate wedding reception this year there! If you are wanting to visit St Ives for the first time and want to avoid the traditional hotel feel, this beautiful contemporary georgian hotel is the place to be. Great decor and breakfasts to die for!!!!
Unbeatable service, ambience and hospitality

I chose the Primrose Valley hotel after an exhaustive search of all of the hotels in St. Ives. I initially booked a room there through an online agency which botched it completely and I was left with 2 tickets to Cornwall and no hotel. I contacted the proprietor Andrew Biss in a panic, and he answered my e-mail immediately. The problem was resolved and we were given the suite, which was exquisit.
I cannot find a single complaint with the hotel. We were greeted on arrival with an offer of cake and a beverage before being excorted up to our room. The room was beautiful and sumptuous with everything one would need should the weather get up to its usual tricks - which it did. Breakfast was varied, delicious and beautifully presented. The decor throughout the hotel is modern, tasteful and comfortable with an air of homely relaxation. I loved the emphasis on sustainability and the environment which gave the holiday added value.
The crowning glory was the remarkable service we received throughout our stay. No request was too big or small to receive minute attention. Andrew and his commendable staff made our dinner reservations, gave advice on where to go and even spent a considerable amount of time making last minute travel arrangements for us, when we realised that we had to get to Gatwick one day earlier than planned.
My advice to anyone considering this hotel is to look no further and to book early, as the guests are most likely to be repeat and very satisfied customers. I would definately be counted amongst them.

Absolutely gorgeous hotel.
We were welcomed by Andrew, the owner of the hotel, who graciously provided us with coffee after our long journey. Throughout the stay he was always on hand to offer any tips or advice for our stay in St Ives.
The rooms were lovely, very individual, yet truly welcoming and presented in excellent order. I travel for a living and am in a different hotel every week, so the personal touches and attention to detail didn't go unnoticed!
Every single one of the staff were personable and a credit to the hotel. The breakfast's were amazing, definately worth dragging ourselves out of bed for!
There is a small bar in the hotel, with an excellent selection of wines, together with a range of delicious food platters, which were ideal for a small lunch or pre-dinner snack.
It is ideally located for Porthminster Beach, our favourite beach in the town, and only a five minute walk in to town.
If we're ever in St Ives again, we'll be sure to stay again.
Excellent hotel - not to be missed!

I can't tell you enough how impressed I was with this hotel. I stayed in the suite, (unfortunately only for 1 night) and it exceeded all of my expectations. The suite is more like a little flat - very contemporary - excellent interior design. My favourite room had to be the bathroom with its coloured floor and ceiling spotlights and luxurious bath and shower. It was both comfortable and very cool - could have stayed much longer. The staff at the hotel were very friendly and helpful and the hotel has a great location - right next to the beach - one not to be missed!
excellent location, wonderful experience
by TripAdvisor Member Time4Tea
we spent two wonderful nights here in early June. we travelled by train with our two very small children - very convenient for the station, but a very peaceful place with almost instant access to one of the best beaches in St. Ives, certainly the one with the best cafe and even a juice bar.
the hotel lives thoroughly by its ecological principles, without stinting on luxury, the rooms have beautiful furnishings, including lovely wooden floors, and everything there is thoughtfully chosen, it is like staying in a very well-appointed and stylish home, rather than a hotel . and the service is genuine and warm - it is the only place I have ever been offered a pot of tea on arrival, and the staff could not have been more helpful and gracious with the children.
the breakfasts are amazing. my husband had poached eggs with goats cheese and said it was the best breakfast he had ever had in a hotel. the cereal buffet and the cooked breakfast were both outstanding.
Fantastic Find..

Having booked late, we now know how lucky we were to get into Primrose Valley. Terrific small hotel, in a fantastic location above Portminster Beach. A welcome drink and slice of cake set the tone after a long drive down and was much appreciated. Room was excellent
- clean, modern and fresh - with views of Porthminster Beach. Breakfasts are excellent, and, whilst they don't do dinner, the Cornish platters available are good, and the well stocked bar also appreciated. All staff are incredibly helpful and friendly (Andrew later told us that they are all permanent staff, so this would seem to help keep standards and consistency high). A short, pleasant walk into St Ives town, and 2 minutes to Porthmister Cafe (on the beach, and worth a visit). The road to the hotel is small, and it is easily missed on the first visit, but you can drive down easily enough (my car is a large estate and we had no problems), and the hotel has parking. All in, it's terrific value, a great hotel, and we'd definitely return - but book now, as they took a booking for 2009 when we were there!!
Extremely comfortable, relaxing and a real treat!

A beautiful property, tastefully decorated and close to Porthminster beach. We stayed for a week in the suite which was a real pleasure, extremely comfortable and very relaxing. We loved the stand alone bath and the possibility to listen to music via ceiling speakers in each room, especially relaxing in a hot tub after exploring the pretty town.
We borrowed a DVD during one very rainy day and enjoyed a glass of wine or two from the hotel selection.
The staff were very helpful, attentive to every request and the breakfasts superb. Enjoyed the fresh baked bread each morning.
It was our time out week and, even though the weather was inclement, we really had a lovely time.

Our latest, annual, visit to Primrose Valley more than met our expectation. Warm welcome, good accommodation, environmentally aware and superb location. We have already booked for 2008.
A disappointing second visit
by TripAdvisor Member RoamerTunbridgeWells
Our second successive years' stay in the same room (No. 2) did not live up to the first. There's no doubt that the view from the bedroom balcony is excellent, along with a first class breakfast and friendly, helpful, waiting staff.
However, the room is relatively small and price had gone up significantly since last year. It no longer represents fair value, in our view.
More important, however, is the apparent complete lack of interest in our comfort by the proprietors. Unlike last year, not a word was spoken in the four days that we stayed - particularly irritating when the hostess was in the vicinity whilst we paid and when we waited whilst a staff member's car was moved from in front of ours.
In summary, really disappointing: it's unlikely we will return.
3rd year at primrose valley
by TripAdvisor Member thebennetts378
this was our 3rd year at the Primrose and as always our stay was fantastic, the staff are friendly and helpful and the tea and cake on arrival very welcome after a long drive from shropshire. The room and bathroom were cleaned every day.The breakfast is the best ever using local produce. a very comfortable and contemporary hotel where nothing is too much trouble.
plenty of good restaurants in St Ives, if you are visiting in the peak season book in advance of your stay.
We as a family look forward to our visit and have booked already for 2008.
