The Brick Train
I too almost missed this brick train sculpture as we flashed past it in the car! (I wasn't quick enough to snap this on my camera so pic is courtesy of freephoto.com). This local artwork, either hated or loved, can be found next to Morrisons Supermarket at Morton Park Industrial Estate on Yarm Road - approximately midway between Darlington town centre and Teesside Airport (and is even AA sign posted). If you want to get a proper look at it then stop in the carpark there and simply walk the couple of hundred yards along a footpath.
For the record some 185,000 bricks were used in its construction along with 170 cubic meters of concrete. The train weighs 15,000 tonnes and covers an area of 600sq meters. It is of hollow construction and measures 23ft high by 130ft long. There are even 20 special 'bat' bricks built in at various places to encourage the nocturnal creatures to use it as their home. Some of the local schools have also donated 'time capsules' which have been put inside the train.
