Travel Tips for Durham
Rain!
by sabsi
After a week in England I started to think that English rain doesn't exist. But there it was. As soon as we got to Durham it started raining!
Luckily it stopped after a short while and as soon as we left Durham the sun came out and it was sunny again! :)
Just one cornetto...give it to me....
by sourbugger
When I was up here we used to go punting out on the river. It was a very pleasant way to waste an afternoon, although sometimes it somewhat spoiled by the very wittly local youths who enjoyed singing the 'Just one Cornetto' song (how amazingly original of them !) from an old advert for walls ice cream.
Oh, that and then gobbing off the bridges onto the boats below.
As a tourist you can take out a rowing boat from Brown's boathouse, but beware of other boats who wish to use their boat as a battering ram, or indeed a college eight at full pelt down the river.
You can also take the leisurely option of cruising around the river bends on the 'Prince Bishops' boat which is run by the same company.
Durham Castle
by aah_stone
Sat opposite the cathedral the castle is really somewhere that should be on your must do list.
A student that is living there may be your guide on your tour or perhaps a local. Either way you will be treated to a lovely experience.
Cathedral
by sandysmith
The Cathedral is well worth a visit to see its interior - photography is not allowed but you can visit various websites for photos of that. I contented myself with walkin around the outside in the lovely sunshine, enjoying all the angles possible! This view shows off the cathedral window.
Riverside Walk
by steventilly
You can walk almost the whole length of the horseshoe sweep of the river that enloses Durham. You can start on either side at Framwellgate Bridge, but I'd recommend the bank furthest from the Cathedral for some better views. If you do take that side you have to cross back at Prebends bridge, about 1/2 way round, and finish the walk on the cathedral side. Eventually you'll end up at Elvet Bridge.
