Lumley Castle Hotel.
About 85 pounds per night in a courtyard room. Now is you chance to stay in a ancient castle, where the origional dungens are now the restaurant, and the bar has wall 5 feet thick.

myself and long term boyfriend went to lumley castle last week and are now deciding when to go back as we thought it was briliant, when i read what the other people have wrote bad about it im wondering if it was the same place, all the staff if you took time to speak to them were really freindly and couldnt do enough to help, the room which was room 50 in the castle itself was beautifully decorated with a huge four poster bed to top it off the bathroom was hidden through the wardrobe.
we had complimentary freebies in the room and breakfast the next day was to die for i had 3 courses lol . Everything was to a very high standard. cooked to perfection as is everything i have ever had from there. i would highly recomend this for a special occation as it will be truly special.

This is the third time we've stayed at Lumley Castle in the last 4 years. This time we had one of the rooms in the courtyard, which while small was really well furnished, very quaint and bags of charater.
Breakfast was, as usual, fantastic; full English breakfast cooked to order - not a buffet. When booking try and get a B&B rate as breakfast is about £12 per person
Would thoroughly recommend the hotel and facilities for a wedding or event
We spent one night at lumley castle and really enjoyed the whole experience the staff all dressed in period costume added to the ambiance we found them to be friendly and very helpful we stayed in a castle feature room which was simply stunning and would highly recommend, the castle itself is steeped in history and its many rooms are decorated to a very high standard with a lot of thought been put into detail, We enjoyed a sumptous feast at the Black Night Restaurant were the service was excellent and the food delicious (There was so much that we were not able to manage breakfast the next day). my overall view is that this is wonderful place stay and most certainly No Ordinary Hotel.
I recently spent an evening at Lumley Castle celebrating my 40th birthday. A very large group of us attended one of their famous medieval banquets - which was absolutely fantastic. This is not to be missed. I was pleasantly surprised at the high standard of the cuisine at the function - having attended many events catering for large groups of people I have consistently been let down by the actual meal. The entertainment was splendid and thoroughly enjoyed by all. So much so a group of us are organising a return visit in the not too distant future. Can't wait!!
Having decided to stay over last minute we were understandably unable to stay in one of the castle rooms and were allocated a room in the courtyard. It was overlooking a pretty garden setting, with a four poster bed and all other amenities one would expect from a luxury establishment - I was impressed at how they managed to disguise all of our "modern" requirements to blend in with the period fittings - even down to the quaint brass electric kettle!
Indeed I cannot in any way fault the whole experience. From the authentically theatrical rooms to the first class treatment we received by their (suitably attired) ever courteous and friendly staff, who throughout my stay constantly went out of their way to make myself and my guests happy.
It achieved all of my very high expectations, being quite a seasoned traveller and I would not hesitate to recommend both a stay at the hotel and the medieval banquet. As their literature claims this really is no ordinary hotel. It is an experience not to be missed and a fine one at that!!
I have stayed at this hotel on numerous occassions and have to say that I find the previous negative review suprising.
We stayed at the hotel while visiting friends in the area two weeks ago and the hotel was as superb as ever. Although on previous visits we have always stayed in the Castle itself, on this occassion we booked a courtyard featue room, and it was delightful. The attention to detail displayed by the housekeeping staff is a credit to the hotel.
On both evenings we dined in the atmospheric Black Knight Restaurant on both evenings and both the wuality of the food and standard of service were exceptinal. Each dish was beautifully presented and adequate but certainly not over whelming as suggested by the previous reviewer.
My only critisicm (and I have to look hard to find one) is the offering of 'bombay mix' to guests with pre-dinner drinks. Haven't the hotel managers seen the numerous articles on the various bacterias that can be found in such offerings!
All in all another enjoyable stay and hopefully one of many more.
Although we had a special offer for the room we were very dissappointed with the accommodation. This was supposed to be a birthday treat but was very poor value for money & didn't feel much like a treat. The staff, however, were very friendly but so are most people from the North. I wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone, not until they bring the price down to Motel prices.
Some friends and I stayed at the Castle for New Year 2007. We were looking for something special and we certainly were not disappointed! We stayed in the new courtyard bedchambers which were immaculately clean and extremely comfortable - nothing like the so called motel rooms other reviewers have compared them to.
Having read some other reviews where guests stated that the castle is dark and has very narrow corridors etc, I would say that this is a 600 year old castle and this is to be expected! The ambiance of the castle is unbelievable and every effort has been made to keep the atmosphere as authentic as possible. We had great fun exploring all the corridors and stairwells.
The quality of the food is second to none. We ate in the Black Knight Restaurant - my friends had the normal 7 course meal and I had the vegetarian option. We could not fault any of the courses and left the restaurant feeling somewhat overstuffed!
The majority of the staff were very helpful although it has to be said not all. Stephen and Michael in the Black Knight Restaurant deserve a special mention as they were very attentive without being obtrusive and kept us amused at the same time!
I have already recommended the Castle to friends and family and can’t wait to go back myself.
Stayed in one of the themes rooms. Very nice room, romantically decorated and very characterful. The room itself I would definitely recommend.
The rest of the hotel I am not so sure about. While it has a lot of character, it is also a bit threadbare and worn in places. Breakfast was chaotic.
Overall, though a special experience (at least if you stay in one of the actual castle rooms), the hotel could do with an update.
This hotel offers a real magical visit, from the moment you enter the court yard you are taken back in time. The original entrance door adds to the quirkiness of your stay, together with the staff dressed in traditional costume. If you can afford it upgrade to a Castle Feature room with its four poster bed and luxurious bathroom which is entered via the middle door in the wardrobe.
We dined in the Black Knight Restaurant which again was in keeping with the sumptious surroundings and found the Table de Hote excellent value for money, 3 courses £30 per head.
both the service and the food were excellent. Only disappointement is the library room which in essence is the bar, it is somewhat jaded and retired looking and very much in need of an up lift with the addition of some more stylish tables and chairs.
We took advantages of the turn down service, which just finished off a wonderful visit, will definitely return, a perfect place for getting hitched!
