Apparently the horse sculpture was declared a masterpiece - anantomically correct in every way. However a blind beggar man ran his hands over the horse sculpture and decided it had no tongue!. The sculptor, Signor Raphael Monti who had boasted no flaw could be found, was said to have committed suicide over this flaw but apparently this is unfounded.
Coal mining has been an essential part of the North-East since the beginning of the industrial revolution.
Nowadays the pits have all gone - and it has been a traumatic change for many of the local communities with the wholesale closure of pits following the collapse of the miners strike in 1984.
Despite all this the tradition of the 'big meeting' or Durham Gala still continues. These days there is more of a carnival rather than a political atmosphere, as people take time to remember the traditions and history of the area.
The parade in 2004 is on July 10th and begins around 9 AM.
Entering through the inner arch of the gate house you'll have a good view of the castle buildings which are on three sides of an irregular-shaped Courtyard. There are tours available so if you enter without being a resident or on a tour you may be asked to leave the premises - as happened to us!
Tunstal's Gallery is a fine example of a Tudor interior. It was built by Bishop Tunstal (1530-1559). The inner wall of this Gallery was formerly the outer wall of Bishop Pudsey's hall, and the great round-headed doorway which faces the Gallery's largest window was once the principal entrance to the lower part of this twelfth-century building. This doorway stands directly opposite the Castle Gatehouse, and was probably approached under a canopy by a long flight of steps from the Courtyard.
The finest example of Norman architecture in the interior of Durham Castle is the 12th century Norman Arch, which Bishop Tunstal preserved when he built Tunstal's Gallery in the 16th century. It is now the entrance to the Senate Room.
