A favouite pub
by sandysmith
The street leading up to the cathedral has many boutiques and pubs this one - the Shakespeare - is one of Steve's favourites. Its only tiny inside apparently - barely room for a dozen people at the most to squeeze inside. If all else fails and you can't get in the Pizza express is next door!
The Dun Cow Inn
by maria_te
Really cosy and friendly traditional English pub on Old Elvet, just 5 minutes walk from the city centre. This place hasn't changed in decades but why to change something when it's not broken!!
They have a good choice (and excellent quality!) of English and local real ales, also a changing guest beer. Pop in for lunch on a Friday- you get fresh (made in the morning) home made pies, warm sandwiches and chillies! For instance, try a steak&mushroom pie (absolutely gorgeous!) and wash it down with a pint of Castle Eden ale.
Definitely worth trying out!
Palace Green
by iwys
Palace Green is the grassy area between the Castle and the Cathedral. It is flanked on one side by the Almshouses. Until the twelfth century, during the time of Bishop Flambard, this area was the centre of Durham and the site of the old market place. It was covered with wooden houses huddled together between the Castle and the Cathedral.
The green is accessed by two cobbled streets called Owengate and Dun Cow Lane, the latter of which gets its name from a local legend involving a milkmaid and her cow. In summer, Palace Green is sometimes used by students of Durham University as a croquet lawn.
Cathedral Cross

Just outside the Cathedral is this huge Celtic Cross - I believe its called Quinn's Cross. On closer inspection i noticed it had similar detail of birds engraved on it - just like the one seen yesterday in Whitby by the church of St Mary's
Visiting Old Durham Town
by gordonilla
"An annual trip away with the EH&S Experts"
Each year, the company I work for organises a health and safety day. This brings together our first aiders, risk assessors and our fire crews. There are always several hundred attending.
This year we have come to County Durham for the event. I am staying in a hotel near to the Cathedral, and the weather is set to be excellent. The town is in fact probably the City of Durham, what with a Cathedral and a University.
It was in fact a very pleasant experience, even with the students still in residence.
