Great hospitaity, great location and breakfasts to die for!

i would definitely recommend Compston House to anyone wanting a friendly, well-run and convenient B&B in the centre of Ambleside.
The B&B is just seconds away from all the local amenities, restaurants and bars, and of course you've got some of the most amazing countryside and walking opportunities in the UK right on the doorstep.
The owners Sue and Jerry are lovely hosts. Very welcoming and remember all guests by name.
Sue's breakfasts are brilliant. Very satisfying portions of local bacon and sausage, complimented by the fluffiest american pancakes and maple syrup if you choose the full american option over the full english. Freshly baked blueberry muffins on a Sunday morning too!
Rooms are themed accordingly to american states, but don't worry, the theming is tasteful and not overdone. Rooms and ensuites are immaculately clean, and bedding and furniture is modern and fresh.
I've stayed in quite a few B&Bs in Ambleside as I'm there for a weekend a month. Compston House has definitely been the best I've booked into.
Great place to stay!

Having booked late for the period between Christmas and New Year we knew that we would not have the full choice of hotels that we would normally stay in. Laterooms.com came up with this place and with a lack of options in our price bracket we stayed here. Overall this is a very well run B&B with superb service and the two owners, Sue and Jerry do everything they can to make your stay comfortable and welcoming. Our room, though small, was very comfortable, with great views and a clean tidy en-suite shower/toilet. Bed was a joy to sleep in and we had everything we needed (TV, wardrobe, tea/coffee, etc)
To sum up. Would I recommend you to stay here, I certainly would! Great location for central Ambleside, fantastic service and very welcoming. My only negative points is that the room was a little on the small side, though it was just enough for us for a 3 day stay, and we paid approx £210 for 3 days (bit pricey though it was peak season). If we return to Ambleside we will probably stay here again, even if it is just to experience the breakfast once more!

We have just returned from staying at Compston House,we stayed for 2 nights and what an enjoyable time we had.The B&B is immaculate the room we stayed in was the "MAINE" room this was spotless very comfortable and had everything we needed.The owners Sue and Jerry are such friendly people they make you feel very welcome.Sue cooks a mean breakfast,i didnt try the pancakes but they looked delicious and not forgetting Jerry his table service is spot on!Nothing was too much for either of them you can have your breakfast just how you like it.(I need to go on a diet now!!)This is by far the best B&B i have stayed in and will most definately be going there again and have already recommended it to friends and family.Overall this B&B ticks all the right boxes.110%.
The friendliest hotel!

From the minute we arrived Sue & Jerry greeted us like we were family. We stayed in the Florida room and it lived up to our expectations, love the little touches! Breakfast in the morning was superb! We both went for the full american breakfast and it was a proper american portion!!! Sue & Jerry were more than helpful in advising us where to go as it was our first time at the Lakes - they even got us 10% discount at the Glass House Restaurant.
Loved it so much that we are planning on going back in the summer with family.

A great B&B with a bit of a difference

Compston House is a great place to stay. It's really centrally located in Ambleside, so you can walk to the shops/restaurants/countryside and local lakes - we didn't use our car while we were there.
Sue and Gerry were so welcoming and helpful. We took their helpful tips on places to eat that they e-mailed to us beforehand, and their advice was right (the Thai restaurant in Ambleside is fab). The breakfasts at Compston House were amazing - it was great to try the American-style (you can't go there and not try a pancake or two!).
We stayed in the Arizona Room, which was lovely and clean, and we could watch the world go by (as well as the great views) from the windows.
We intend to go back and stay there again, and would recommend it to our friends.
Immaculate B and B

This was the most immaculate place to stay. Everywhere looked as if it had just been painted the day before.Sue and Jerry were very friendly and made us feel most welcome. Our room was small but fresh and bright with lovely furnishings. The en-suite shower room was tiny ( don`t stay here if you are big ) but also immaculately clean. It could have done with somewhere to put saop/shampoo in the shower and as there was no heating was a little chilly in February. Breakfasts were good but perhaps in our opinion not as wonderful as others say. A menu card to show the different options would have been good as we were offered cereal and brought cornflakes without being given a choice. Then heard another guest asking for something different and Jerry mentioned several other cereals that were available. The pancakes with maple syrup were very nice but not on the same plate as a cooked breakfast. We were offered more pancakes and toast which were both freshly done so you certainly wouldn`t go hungry. All in all we would certainly recommend this lovely B and B.

Enjoyed a wonderful three night stay at Compston House in early March. Sue and Jerry were warm and welcoming hosts who catered for our every need. Compston House breakfasts come highly recommended, but make sure you build up your appetite with some good fell walking - meagre portions they aint! Comfortable, clean rooms and excellent location in centre of Ambleside. We'll be back.
Fantastic, friendly and not to be missed!

From the moment we arrived, we received a very friendly welcome from Sue and Jerry . We were staying for the weekend and Sue made sure we had booked somewhere to eat on the Saturday night so we would not be disappointed.
The room was lovely, bright and clean. We echo one of the other reviews, the whole place looks as if it has been redecorated especially for your visit. As another reviewer said, the en suite is a little small, but it contains everything you need and we found it to be fine. The rooms are all themed down to the smallest detail. It was interesting reading all about New York!
The breakfasts were amazing. As a vegetarian, I find breakfasts away from home a disappointment, but not here. With a choice of cereal, toast, cooked breakfast and pancakes, you couldn't ask for more.
Jerry as the waiter does a wonderful job of trying to get you to eat more of Sue's wonderful cooking - apparently the record for pancakes at breakfast is 12 - I only managed 4 and that filled me up well into the afternoon, not bad for a person who is hungry every day on the dot of 12!
The cooked breakfast was made fresh with local ingredients and cooked to perfection. Clean plates all round.
Sunday morning has a special treat with fresh blueberry muffins. Sue even gave us two extra on departure to see us through our walk. Little touches like that make such a difference.
Overall a fantastic place - we will definitely be going back.

my wife and i stayed at compston house for a short break in march ,all i can say is wow ,what a fantastic guest house this is ,from the moment we stepped foot in compston house sue and jerry made us feel absolutely welcome almost part of the family.you will not find a better host and hostess in the british isles .the hotel is immaculately clean and tidy ,our room was the florida room and it was fantastic everything you need and more ,cleanliness in abundance.sue and jerry made our stay the best few days we have spent anywhere in the uk and we have stayed at quite a few establishments.sue,s breakfasts are to die for ,and please try her pancakes with syrup woooohoooo the best treat you will have as breakfasts go, believe me they are awesome .i really havent got enough space to write a perfect review on compston house i could go on all dayt about this place ,but please if you want a great location and a fantastic host and hostess ,and a beautiful place to relax in then try COMPSTON HOUSE brilliant to say the least i will be booking again soon for a summer break and i cant wait ,sue and jerry thank you thank you thank you ,you made our stay the best , so people here is my rating out of 10 for compston house cleanliness 10 ,location 10 ,hotel 10 ,and sue and jerry 11 keep up the great work guys hope to see you soon .......MAL
