More about Summer Hill Country House

AWESOME stay at Summerhill !!

by TripAdvisor Member Manj

Stayed at Summer Hill last weekend with my family and it was BRILLIANT - to say the least !!

The place is gorgeous and extremely well-maintained. It is situated near Hawkshead (~10 mins drive from Ambleside) - away from all the crowds and the hustle (but making it necessary to have a vehicle to get around easily).

The owners , Patsy+Mike, Zoey+Rob, make the stay even more special. Being vegetarians, we were a little apprehensive about what we would be served for breakfast other than fruit and bread (having stayed at other B&Bs). Special effort was made to ensure we got a full vegetarian breakfast (pancakes et al).

Would go back to Lake district only to stay at Summer Hill!!

Wonderful place

by TripAdvisor Member DMLO

If you are looking for a B&B in the Lake District, this is where you would want to stay. The location is superb. It overlooks the meadows and is a good base for walks in the countryside (most notably the beautiful Tarn Howe). It is close to Ambleside, Windermere and Coniston. The B&B itself is an oasis of peace and the owners make you feel at home. We were welcomed with tea and cake, and received very good advise about places to see. The house is very comfortable and beautifully designed. We would definitely recommend this wonderful place.

A great place to relax

by TripAdvisor Member Shorty8

We spent a long weekend at Summer Hill Country House and
found it to be a place where you could really get away from it all.
This was the first time we went to the Lake District and we were not disappointed

It is a bit further out from the hussle and bussle of the towns in the lake district . But it is not to far away that you have far to travel. The accommadtion was first class. The rooms were very clean and ensuite and well presented and the t.v options in the room was a clever idea .

The attention to detail was great . We had a welcoming card in our room and chocolate beside our bed. It was very well thought out

We had a lovely view from our room and the peace and quiet was an absoulute joy .There was a wonderful lake just up the road and the views at dusk were great. It was nice to go a little further out to get the peace of the country side and to get a real feel for the area . We were ideally located

The service was very friendly and you were made to feel very welcome the minute you arrived . You had a good choice for breakfast as much or as little as you want .

Nothing felt to much there and if you are looking for a bed and breakfast a little further out and away from it all Summer Hill Country House is the place. We really enjoyed it

"Boutique" B&B in a lovely location!

by TripAdvisor Member FVSUk

We just spent a fantastic weekend at Summer Hill Country House: we specially appreciated the "little touches" at arrival and during our stay: cakes/teas at arrival, chocolate at your bedside, daily change of towels, walking maps and books available etc. The owners seem a very complimentary team and there is a nice, relaxed and welcoming atmosphere in the house. Nothing is too much of an effort and you feel a lot of thought and effort have been put in the B&B. If you are looking for a comfortable B&B with "a little extra", go ahead and book your night!

Just Perfect

by TripAdvisor Member selcourt

In a sense i feel a bit embarressed at writing such a review. Everything was so perfect, so good, I fear that an objective reader may have his doubts.
But - it genuinely was that good, that perfect.
The location, the food, the hosts, the rooms, the comfortable beds - even for our 14 year old son. It wasn't a case (like in other B & B's) where children are considered "accoutrements" who will make do with back breaking beds.
Internet in each room is also a definate plus compared with other B & B's.
This was our first stay in a trip where we travelled a lot - and Summer Hill was without a shadow of doubt the best of the lot.
Can't wait to return.

Absolutely superb!

On arriving after a long 20 mile hike over the fells of Langdale and Coniston, Summerhill was a very welcome sight - even more so was the lovely wecome we received from hosts Zoe and Rob. We were ushered into the very comfortable lounge for tea and the most delicious looking cake and chatted about our day before any formalities such as check in were even mentioned.
We stayed in room 2 which is quite compact but beautifully furnished with a lovely view of the garden and valley beyond. The room also has the benefit of internet access.
We certainly slept soundly.
Breakfast was equally good with my husband having the full English and me porridge - This was specially made for me after Zoe had made a note when my husband booked the room 5 weeks previously that I particularly like porridge for breakfast being a vegetarian.
In fact I'd say that it was little things like this that make Summerhill so special.
We will be back ...

Spent a lovely few days in Summer Hill Country House and have to recommend it. Welcome was perfect, food, accommodation etc was all first class. They Patsy & Mike and Zoey and Rob, recommended great walks, places to eat and things to do. Cannot fault them.

I can't say a bad word about the place. On arrival we were greeted with tea and cakes. The room was beautifully decorated and little touches like chocolates by the bed and a card with the weather forcast on the breakfast table were really nice. The breakfast was delicious and consisted of plently of choice. Topped off by really friendly owners made the stay one to remember.

A truly incredible experience

My wife and I had the pleasure of staying at Summer Hill over Easter and have since been back on a couple of occasions (once in May and again in July for a couple of days). I expect we will be frequenting this B&B for years to come.

The house itself is breathtaking, having been restored to impeccably high standards. It retains the character of an older building without the 'chintzy' feel of many other Lakeland B&Bs. The owners have got the balance perfect between old and new. The house itself would be a deal breaker but it's the service and hospitality that really make it. Fresh, home-made carrot cake and coffee on arrival, luxury chocolates next to the beds, coffee with real milk in the rooms (no UHT plastic containers here!), an Apple Mac media centre with streaming music and films to wind down with (with a full explaination of how to use it by Rob, one of the owners). Every aspect of a relaxing getaway have been covered, including free use of a local health club for when the weather prevents you from scaling any of the local hills.

I couldn't recommend Summer Hill more highly. It must be one of the best B&Bs for decor in the UK and Rob, Zoe, Mike and Patsy will do everything within their power to make your stay perfect. Highly recommended.

Just come back from a few days staying at Summer Hill Country House and have to say it was a fantastic choice.
We decided to stay there after all the good reviews on here and everyone was telling the truth!

The house is about 10-15 mins from Ambleside with plenty of parking. We were welcomed with tea and home made cake and shown the house which is tastefully decorated -a great mix of modern but comfortable (not too chintzy as another reviewer put it) , with some great artwork/photos done by one of the owners Patsy.

The bedroom was spotlessly clean as was the rest of the place and well equiped (TV, internet, hairdryer) There was a choice of tea/coffee etc in the room and a flask of fresh milk each day as well as home made biccies and a chocolate by the bedside :o)

Breakfast was a relaxed affair-none of this having to get up at the crack of dawn otherwise you've had it. There was a good choice cereals, fruit. yoghurt and of course the traditional cooked breakfast all freshly prepared using local produce and even home made bread, a great way to start the day in the Lakes.

The owners were very friendly and helpful without being over-bearing and nothing seemed to much hassle for them.

Would we recommend Summer Hill House? - Yes definitely.
Well done Patsy, Mike, Zoe and Rob - we'll be back soon.
