Appleby in Westmoreland
"Appleby Horse Fair"
My wife and I and my cousin and his wife went to the Appleby Horse Fair this summer. For those who don't know about this event, here is a short history. King James II granted a Royal Charter to allow a horse fair to be held in Appleby every year. The fair attracts tens of thousands of gypsies and travellers who meet chiefly to trade horses. The fair happens every year in early June and is an amazing spectacle. Horses ridden bareback, race through the very crowded streets of the town. The Fair Hill is turned into a huge caravan site. It is well worth a visit.
