More about Linthwaite House Hotel

A little jewel!

by A TripAdvisor Member

My husband booked an overnight stay recently at the Linthwaite House Hotel as a surprise for my birthday. It was a real treat and the staff provided above average service in a peaceful and beautiful setting overlooking Lake Windermere. Staff are friendly yet attentive and efficient and it was a nice touch to see the proprietor talking to the guests, making sure they were happy and well catered for.

Guests have the option to use the local Country Club gym/swimming pool which also has a sauna and steam room.

The food was memorable and beautifully cooked, we had the sea bass which had a crispy skin and tender and succulent flesh, exactly right; ~ the puddings were just delicious, especially the hot chocolate fondant dessert. There is an option to have just two courses if desired which was ideal for us. The ample wine list was sensibly priced.

Breakfast was delicious and full of flavour, such a change from the usual 'hot buffet' style adopted by so many hotels now.

Our room was large and comfortable with plenty of tea/coffee etc.

We would highly recommend the Linthwaite House Hotel and will certainly stay again.

Fantastic!

My partner and I stayed for just one night but wished we had booked for a week!! It was fantastic - from the minute we arrived the staff where exceptionally welcoming and friendly.
We received a quick tour of the hotel whilst our luggage was taken to our room and then given the option to book dinner in the restaurant. You have to eat here! The food is gorgeous. (Breakfast is just as exciting as the evening meal!) We received lots of attention from the staff but they did not overwelm you. The hotel is only a few minutes from Bowness village but I recommend you have at least one drink by the open fire in the lounge before venturing out.

The rooms are beautifully decorated and we had a lovely view of the garden. The grounds of the hotel are also amazing. All in all we had a lovely stay and we will be recommending it to all our friends and family. The only thing that was not perfect was the good old British weather!

Stay away from the food!

This hotel offers a fantastic setting and some amazing views and is located about a mile or so from Bowness. We stayed in September 2005 for 4 nights. There are two major problems the food is very over priced at £44 per head it is nearly as expensive as Gordon Ramsey’s and not in the same league. It is obvious what they are trying to achieve however they are missing the point. We had dinner on our first night and unfortunately it did bug me that we had been ripped off. I do not mind paying for something if it is value for money but the food is not. The other issue is the staff. They are without exception very helpful and can't be faulted for the service however you get the feeling they are like robots!! The owner has clearly told them what they can and can't do and they won't do anything you ask unless they have been trained to do it. An example being our breakfast on the first morning. As we were seated I asked if we could have some coffee whist we waited to order our food, I was told that unfortunately the waiters are not allowed to bring you coffee and we would need to wait for the manager!! We then had to sit and wait for 20 mins for the manager to finish dealing with three other tables of two before we could order the coffee. The way the staff try so hard to impress and be over formal creates an very tense atmosphere in the whole hotel. It is very strange that the guests don't seem to talk even between themselves!!

The room was excellent and the walk to the tarn is a must to appreciate the full view of Lake Windermere. We went out for diner and found some great places to eat so all was not lost. We would not go back on the basis there must be better places to stay that offer value for money. My other tip is don't book direct the prices are ridiculous you can get good deals on the internet.
