Hi there
Does anyone know how to get to Hadrian's wall from Carlisle? Is the sight reachable by public transport, is it perhaps within walking distance from the city centre? Thanks.
Eugene
It depends on when you are visiting.
There is an excellent bus service which runs along the Wall from Newcastle-on-Tyne>Carlisle (mostly during the summer months). Timetable here:

But if you are visiting out of season then you can still get to Housesteadsetc from Carlisle by bus (e.g. the 185). Info and links here:

There is an informative web site showing walks and other ideas around Carlisle :

but for the wall itself and the open countryside you need to go East towards Newcastle.
Hi Eugene
In summer (not sure about other times) there is an Explorer bus service that goes along the wall from Carlisle to Newcastle. Otherwise there are rail stops at Haltwhistle and, I think, Greenhead on the Carlisle-Newcastle line
Enjoy your visit!
Trouble is, Haltwhistle and Greenhead are quite some way from the Wall sites themselves.
There may be local buses, but I somehow doubt they will be frequent.
It is much better to visit wheh the special Wall bus is running (and the weather should be better too!).
