Cranford House Guest House: Good no-frills bed and breakfast in Keswick
Carol and Kevin Hallgarth gave us a really friendly welcome when we turned up on the doorstep of Cranford House. This is exactly what they say on their website: good solid no-frills (no flowery wallpaper, no doilies and no nasty bedding) bed and breakfast. It is the kind of no-nonsense holiday accommodation that Keswick is well-known for, and Cranford House seem to do it very well.
Friendly hosts, good firm and comfortable beds, clean rooms, handy location close to Keswick town centre, and a great breakfast the following morning.

Hall Hills Cottages: East Cumbria's best self-catering cottages
It takes a little effort to find Hall Hills and you need your own transport, but then this is really off the beaten track and that is all part of the attraction. Above the little bridge you see the red stone buildings that date back to the 17th century and were a farm until just a few years ago. Now they have been converted into self-catering holiday cottages. This isn't the cheapest option within a 10-mile radius but these are cottages that have been given 4 and 5 stars. We felt that this was a really good base for our holiday in Cumbria even though it wasn't in the Lake District National Park. It was pretty close, though, and easy enough to get to by car going along scenic country lanes.
Genuinely relaxing and in a pretty location even though the hills and lakes are about 20 miles to the west. Well-equipped cottages stylishly done. Nice private patios.

Cherry Grove: Bed and Breakfast
We spent a night on our way to Scotland. We arrived very late but were given rooms which were decent with en suite bathroom, satellite and colour Tv [does anyone have only black and white these days?]. Each room had hairdryer, tea and coffee making facilities, and there was private parking.
It was quite acceptable as a stopover.
I don't remember exactly how much we paid, but it was not too dear.
Nothing out of the ordinary, and I didn't sleep well. I felt someone was pressing down on the sides of the bed and a male voice was calling "Mamee. " Now, I'm not shouting ghost or anything. My son and his wife were in the next room. I was probably overtired, and knew I was on the way to see my dying brother; but it was not a comfortable night.
