Kemplerigg Certificated site: One We Return To Again and Again

This is one of our all time favourite certificated locations and we are lucky enough to have it less than an hour away from us. It was one of the first sites we ever stayed on in our motorhome, back in 1996 and nothing has changed, 14 years later.Bliss!!

There is a huge nine acres of field, in three sections, to choose where you want to pitch. Most of the site is flat but at the top of the first field, where the best views are from, you will need levelling chocks.

The owners are exceptionally friendly folks who like to have a good old chinwag.You can learn a lot from the Prestons!

The huge empty field and the stunning views up to Wasdale Head all make this a beautiful site but for us, an even better quality is the fact that there are NO electric hook ups. The only facilities are a tap and a chem. disposal point. We need nothing more and this site fits the bill perfectly.

It's location is close to the Cumbrian coast with it's sandy beaches and right in the heart of the western Lakes, wastwater being a short drive away.

In the 14 years of our staying here, the price has risen from £2.50 to a staggering £3.50. Need I say anymore?

Mill Beck Certificated Site: Nice Location, Shame About The Price.....

We were pleased to see the inclusion of this site (5 units only) in the Camping and Caravanning Club, as Dent was somewhere we weren't very familiar with. The price quoted in the Club's handbook was £6 - £7 a night.

Upon arrival, we were amazed to find it empty, in such a lovely location. Our hostess met us and that's when things went wrong. We were charged £6 each per night, doubling the quoted price. Needless to say, we were not happy bunnies. We tried explaining club rules meant a nightly fee should be inclusive for a family of four and a caravan/motorhome/tent. The site owner would have none of this so our only option was to pay up as we didn't want to have to move onto the commercial site. I did write a letter to the Camping Club about the situation and am presently awaiting a reply.

0.8 acres of sloping field, a tap, chemical disposal and a port-a-loo. On the main road so noisy until night time. Nice views of surrounding countryside. Close to the village and it's shop, cafes and pubs.

County Hotel Carlisle: Carlisle Centre

£ 49 single was great value for bed and breakfast. The hotel was newly decorated inside, but outside yet to be done. The room was clean with comfy bed, en suite, tv and kettle to make tea or coffee provided. Breakfast was full English breakfast. There a Bar and Restaurant., and Lift. The architecture of the hotel is from a bygone day but this hotel is definitely of today.

County Hotel Kendal: Handy for Lake District Cumbria

This hotel is 100m from Kendal railway station. Has you walk down the slope from the station the hotel is straight in front of you. In July 2010 it was shining yellow having just been painted. The room was en suite with comfy bed, and kettle to make your own tea and coffee. Staff where friendly. Breakfast was full English , enough to fill till evening. There is a Bar.

The price for single was £46 including breakfast.

Borderside Farm: Scenic, Rural and Close to Lake Windermere.

A most marvellous location, tucked in off a very minor road and close to Lake Windermere. Despite being so close to one of England's most famous lakes, it remains quiet and unspoilt.
Although there were a couple of caravans here, they were unoccupied, as were a couple of very small tents that seemed to have been abandoned. We literally had the whole 3 acres to ourselves apart from a flock of tups that were later removed (I don't know whether it was for our own safety or the sheep's - they were quite big boys....!)

Upon arriving, we had an alfresco lunch, accompanied by birdsong and not much else and appreciated our rural surroundings. It was marvellously peaceful and we couldn't understand why, on such a glorious weekend,we were the only residents, particularly when you take into consideration how close we were to Lake Windermere.
The site's situation was ideal for touring the small roads by motorbike and we spent a very enjoyable afternoon tootling along them.

2010 price: £5 per unit per night.

For us, the fact that this was a basic farm site with no electric hook-ups. More and more CL's are installing electricity so caravanners who come to escape the ratrace can enjoy all mod cons in their vans. We never understand this, caravans and motorhomes have leisure batteries and do not need a power supply. We can only presume they are watching television, using an amazing amount of lighting, microwaving and any other item they can think of to be plugged in for! Is it really worth coming away from home??

The outlook was beautiful. Fields of sheep and cows in the distance, woods and fell land. Hardly a building in sight. Oh, and not forgetting the birds of prey.

Update. Returned here in May 2008 year and again in July 2010.Glorious weekend. Still as lovely as ever.Much excitement when a hot air balloon passed over us.

Scales Cottage: Outstanding Location

We were looking for a site in the Mungrisdale area.As it was heading for winter and we had had plenty of rain, we knew we would require hardstandings to stop our motorhome getting bogged in. We also wanted to test our freeview boxes before we went digital (north Cumbria having already gone digital) so electricity was a good idea. Scales Cottage fitted the bill with glorious views thrown in as an added bonus.

The site is set in a huge field, with two distinct areas, a mown grassy area for tents and the hardstandings at the other end for caravans and motorhomes. All pitches offer fantastic views to Blencathra and surroundiing fells and it is wonderfully quiet, being out in the middle of nowhere.

There is a good recycling facility and electric hook-ups with extension leads.

The gate to the site must be closed at night to stop the fell ponies entering and nibbling and buffeting the vans!! There is also a notice mentioning keeping bin lids secure to stop badgers pilfering!! I wish we had seen one....

You have to be a member of the Camping and Caravan Club to use this site.

The friendly, helpful owners, who although away during our stay, were extremely helpful when I phoned to book. Instructions were to leave our rent in the letterbox only if we had enjoyed our stay. We thought £8 a night including electric was good value for a site in this location and with hardstandings.

The views were very special as you will see from the photos on the website and ours.

This is a beautiful, well maintained site, excellently located in extremely scenic surroundings.
You have to be a member of the Camping and Caravan Club to use this site.

Sawbridge Hall: Good Location

This site is well off the beaten track in the middle of nowhere, which is exactly as we wanted.

We took the long way round, taking less major roads across Tarn Moor.When we arrived, we were a little put off, as we had been assured the site was level. Well, we actually tried three different parts of the acre field and still weren't bang on level. Still, we weren't that far out, we had been less level in our times away so opted for our last pitch, at the rtop of the field.

Disappointingly, there aren't any real views from the site, despite being in a very scenic part of the world. We were surrounded by rolling fields and our neighbours were cows and their fairly new born calves.

Once again, we were the sole occupants on site and had the place to ourselves.

We walked up to the farm and paid our £4 a night fee. Water was on site but the chem disposal was some distance away in a seperate field with no water supply. Not so good. The whole place had a slightly run-down feeling to it but this did not put us off.

Very quiet, away from it all but well positioned for exploring both Appleby and Kirkby Stephen.

Be warned, this site has sheep, fresh sheep *** everywhere!

Keld Farm Certificated Location: Rural Bliss!

This site is in north eastern Cumbria.

This was the May Day bank holiday weekend and we had this site all to ourselves! Just as well, really, as it was all sloping and the only place we could get level with the help of a ramp was in the top corner.

The site is an acre of sloping grass, offering lovely views to the fells to the east. The drive to it is surfaced and in early May, was lined with daffodils.

Facilities included a tap, a bin and a chemical disposal point, which is all we required. The price per night was £5.

Ideally located for exploring the Eden Valley, as well as Penrith and Appleby. The site had the feeling of remoteness, being well off the minor road but in fact, was reasonably close to the B6413 and the M6. Here, we found perfect peace with only the sound of an owl disburbing the peace at night time.

Would definitely recommend.

Croft House Camping Club Certificated Location: Peace and Tranquility

I picked this site, (close to the north Cumrian town of Shap) simply because it was in an area we didn't know too well and it was in a quiet location. What a winner this turned out to be!!

The site is a 2 acre level(ish) field lined by trees, presumably planted for shelter. On our visit, the field had been newly mown but the surrounding fields were absolutely full of celandines, creating yellow carpets everywhere.

We had the whole place to ourselves, which we were surprised at, given it's proximity to Haweswater and it being a beautiful early summer weekend.

The site does have a toilet which was cleaned especially for us upon our arrival and we didn't even use it, preferring to use our own onboard facilities. Other amenities include a tap and a chemical disposal point. No hook ups, which we liked, so don't come here expecting to run all your electrical equipment.

Purely it's quiet location, close to Haweswater as well as the pretty village of Bampton and the town of Shap. There are plenty of pubs in the area if that's what you are looking for, but all a drive away.

The owners were very friendly and the site has resident ducks!

We were charged 6 a night and thought that reasonable in this day and age. It was so nice to find a basic site without electricity, just listening to the sounds of nature at work around us.

Marsh Farm Camp Site: Coast, Town, Railway and Fells

This site is on the coast(the Duddon Estuary) at Askam-in-Furness, about two miles from Dalton.

There is a part with privately owned statics of all shapes, sizes and age with a small area for touring vans. It has direct access to the beach with coastal walks.

There is also a seperate, very nice field for campers and caravanners.

Facilities include old, basic showers and toilets, clean, and a washing up area.

Next door is a golf course complete with clubhouse, if you are into that sort of thing.
It's good fun searching for discarded, lost golf balls!

Stunning views across the estuary.

We were charged £5 (2006) a night in the motorhome. I told you Furness is good value!!!!
