We have just returned from 3 night mid-week break at the Castle Inn. The hotel decor is light and airy and the bedrooms had been recently refurbished and were warm. We stayed in a family room, with two separate rooms. We were very surprised at the quality of the evening meals and the friendly service. Good choice of both English and continental Breakfasts.
The indoor swimming pool is lovely, together with Sauna and Steam room. The Hotel is ideally situated for touring the Lake District.
Overall I would say this is probably one of the best 3 star Hotels we have stayed at.
Great Hotel, Really Friendly Staff
by TripAdvisor Member Apricorn
Very Nice Hotel, great leisure facilities with a good gym, nice sized pool and Jacuzzi as well as steam room and sauna, which were all great! Staff were very friendly and chatty, probably the friendliest of any hotel have visited in England., and really added to the trip. Only one problem - shower did not work in room when we arrived but we reported it and it was fixed by the time we returned to our room a few hours later, so no complaints there. Very Clean, food and wine from restaurant slightly overpriced but good. Hotel Bar and restaurant lacked atmosphere though. Probably because of recent renovation all very modern, not really to my personal taste though. Great Location, with a nice view of the lake! No restautants or pubs within walking distance nearby though. All in all a very nice hotel.
Never to return!

First appearances were great and promised great things ahead, however the refurb seemed only to have extended to the public congregational areas and our room certainly had not been refurbished. It was all mismatched and smelt foisty and uncared for and the bath actually had patches missing and aparantly been 'filled in'. It was a very miserable room and the shame is that it wouldn't have taken much effort or money to put things right. The bar had minus atmosphere and I couldn't wait to get away from the bright lights, illuminating the 'faux' wood tables and bar area! Again- little things like lighting could have made things seem better. I have seen another review talking about the "Sun Inn" pub. We went there after having paid £31 for a steak, salad, and chips at the hotel bar- it wasn't worth the money at all. It is only a mile away and serves wonderful food at much less cost, in a cosy pub environment.
To summise, I would say that any hotel which serves instant coffee in a cafetiere, is somewhat misguided! You have been warned folks!

Stayed as a last minute thing, had a slight problem with our room but when we informed the reception it was dealt with in minutes and we were upgraded as an apology. All the hotel staff very friendly and helpful, the breakfast was fantastic. The hotel was very clean and we enjoyed the leisure facilities. We will stay again and we would recommend.

Wil never stay there again
Worst Stay Here Ever

We have been staying at the Castle Inn Hotel for a number of years and we feel that this will be our last. We were very disappointed. Problems from the start. Booked to stay Dinner, Bed and Breakfast for 2 Adults and 2 Children in an executive family room. Room offered not executive, poorly decorated and smelt damp. Upgraded on request to executive room of which we were very happy. On check in found out that "you shouldn't have been told children were included for dinner as that is not our policy" ended up costing us an extra £70 for 4 nights. Asked for some sort of compromise for the "misunderstanding" Manager was rude. Refused to even compromise. Food very limited. Childrens menu never changed. Ended up paying £4.95 for a plate of chips for my son, twice.
excellent stay

Just got back from a stay in the Lake District where we stayed at the Castle inn Hotel. I was a bit nervous after we saw some of the other reviews on this site, but I can only speak as I find and the Hotel was superb, from the friendly staff, wonderful bedroom and the restaurant food, we did not try the bar meals. My wife especially enjoyed the very large swimming pool, unusual size for a hotel, whilst I tried to work off the extra pounds on the new gym equipment. The Hotel is not in the hustle and bustle of Keswick, which is why we chose it , but does have some wonderful views of Bassenthwaite Lake and Scafell mountain, its also handy for the osprey viewing where we went several times.
Will definitely be back
Superb break

Having stayed at the Castle Inn Hotel in August we were extremely happy to use it again in September. On both occasions the reception and attitude of all the staff were excellent. Our rooms were very large and well presented.
We used the restaurant on both evenings and also the bar for a lunch and in each case the food and service were very good indeed.
The hotel has a well equipped leisure centre with pool. We only used the fitness suite which was well equipped with the latest machines.
It was also good to see so much car parking space! Conveniently situated by Bassenthwaite and only minutes from Keswick and the walking in Borrowdale this is definitely an hotel to which we shall return.
A great stay in a lovely place

We stayed in the hotel in September, and had a great time. Special thanks to the manager and his staff who made sure our stay, after recently becoming engaged, was lovely.
Food was great and service likewise. The room was very clean, I think it had all recently been refurbished and had everything we needed. We didn't use the gym facilities or swimming pool what with the Lakes on the doorstep.
As a base for exploring the Northern Lakes and at the prices we paid we couldn't have asked for more. I'd definitely go back (in fact I've just booked for December).
very enjoyable

Stayed for 3 nights (tues-fri).
The room was massive and so was the bathroom. Very nicely decorated.
Dinner - Food was very nice but there wasn't very much on the plate! Breakfast very nice buffet style 2 days and served another day.
Staff in restaurant and bar were efficient and very friendly. We came across 2 members of staff who were not British but who spoke perfect english.
Leisure Centre was quiet and nice; pool, spa bath, steam room, sauna and gym.
The hotel was a bit out of the way but most people are driving anyway......
Overall, a good experience!
