Travel Tips for Keswick
The Derwentwater Money Tree

If you are hiking around or part way around Derwentwater Lake, there is a large dead tree laying on the ground about a half mile from the Keswick Launch Company's main boat docks if hiking clockwise around the lake. I am not sure why we stopped to look at it, but when we did we noticed a pence sticking out of it. Then we noticed more pence and more pence. Then we noticed a small rock sitting on the tree making it convenient to add your own pence. So we did. Kind of a fun little thing to stumble upon a money tree.
A place to pig out

We ate here a couple of times. Rosemarie doesn't return to a place unless she's wholly satisfied and, since this is one of a chain of such hotels you may consider looking them up at other places where you find them.
It will be great when eventually you can't smoke in pubs. Despite initial reticence, it's worked in Australia.
Keswick

One of the main towns in the national park, Keswick does suffer from horrible overcrowding in the high season but there are plenty of opportunities to escape the crowds.
It's a good base for exploring the Derwentwater, shoreline, climbing hills like Latrigg Fell or the Catbells and walking to the Castlerigg stone circle.
Boats make circuits around the lake, perfect for a shortcut back to the hostel when the heavens open halfway into your walk (I know).
