Travel Tips for Keswick

Buttermere explained

by iandsmith

The name of this enticing small lake, just under 2 kms long, may derive from the verdant pastures at either end. The prominent Red Pike (see my second page), which doesn't overpower you but you can't help noticing it, rises from the western shore, along which a path can be found, linking the hamlet of Buttermere with Honister Pass. The Fish Inn is located at the former, and its claim to fame is that a daughter of one of the early owners married a bigamist and forger who was hanged in 1803, the incident described in "The Prelude" by William Wordsworth.
The third shot is one of my favourites because it shows how vast the landscape can be.

Cumberland Pencil Museum

by WheninRome

We did not take the tour of the Cumberland Pencil Museum; however, we did park at the pay and display lot in back of the Museum, which we found to be one of the cheaper and more convenient lots in the Village of Keswick. It is a few blocks walk from the Village center, but it is worth it due to the easy in and easy out access. Still, you want to arrive here fairly early in the day or else this lot will be full also.

If you park in the lot you might as well as least peruse the Pencil Museum gift shop. It is especially nice for children and the Museum tour is also probably well-suited for kids as well. In the gift shop we purchased some pencils with Derwent graphite - the original graphite first used in pencils. I guess the locals discovered the graphite and found that it was useful for marking sheep and later for writing with.

The ideal Lake District town

Keswick seems to be 'all things to all men', It is a big enough town to provide a few hotels , a couple of supermarkets, a few pubs, a tourist info office a very good saturday market. and a couple of lovely parks. Derwentwater itself is stunning with walks and ferry rides aplenty. It is a scenic little town with plenty to offer-there is even a theatre, but it never seems 'mobbed' like windemere, and it is very easy to walk just a couple of hundred yards and be back in peacefull scenery away from the crowds.
