Travel Tips for Keswick

Rowing

by steventilly

On a sunny day it's nice to take a boat out onto Derwentwater. Rowing boats can be hired from the hut at the Keswick landings. Get one for a couple of hours - you can't really get anywhere in an hour. Note that Derwent Island (the nearest one) is private and you're not allowed to land there.

Buttermere

by WheninRome

Buttermere is a wonderful little village less than 20 minutes from Keswick (if you don't stop the car to admire the wonderful valley view or to hike on the drive between the two towns). There isn't a great deal here, but a hike around the lake, a few minutes nosing around the church, and an ice cream cone at the dairy are all musts.

Beware that parking can be an issue during the day. There are a couple pay and display lots - one behind the inn and restaurant in town and another just outside of town on the way to Lorton. You can also park for free along the road or in a small lot above Buttermere Church.

The hike around Buttermere Lake is wonderful and is easily manageable by people of almost all capabilities. I particularly enjoyed the tunnel that you must walk through (pictured below) and the stone bridges as well as the lake and fell views.

All things considered

by iandsmith

Just before Watendlath (where did they get that name from) there's a cute barn and some of those tri-coloured Italian cattle. Couldn't resist taking a pic.
Picture 2 shows the very high stile I had to traverse to do my short walk. The one where I spent half a hour cringing under a lone tree and sheltering behind a small rock wall, desperately trying to keep my camera and self a little bit dry.
The third shot shows the field flowers next to me that I shot while I was bored waiting for the weather to clear and the last one beckons the sun to reappear.
