Travel Tips for Keswick

Portinscale

by steventilly

There's not a great deal at Portinscale; there's a pub, a cafe, a "cute" suspension bridge over the river and some hotels, yet despite this we tend to go there on every visit to Keswick that we make.
For us the best thing in Portinscale is one of the hotels, The Derwentwater. We've stayed there a few times in their self catering apartments which are *very* comfortable and especially cosy in the wintertime.
The hotel is great too, and has a huge conservatory at the back overlooking its garden and right down to the lake. When we go there now we go to spend a while in the conservatory, having a coffee or afternoon tea, and reading a book. It's lovely.
The pub in the village (The Farmer's Arms) is Jennings, and you'll find it almost where the road out joins the A66.

The Lake

by steventilly

Derwentwater is a very accessible lake - there's only a short stretch of it's whole circumference (around Lingholm house & gardens) that you can't get access to. It's great to walk right around the lake (it takes a while!) or to walk part way and take the boat the rest of the way. Apart from the bit here at Keswick, the best bits of the lake for me are the opposite end, from Lodore past Grange and round to Hawes End. It's nice to go swimming from Abbot's Bay, or fromthe small bay just past Friar's Crag.

That Alpine Feel

by RoscoeGregg

"That Alpine Feel"

You have to love the feel of alpine towns. From Jackson to Chamonix the air and light are so revitalizing. It was so strange to get that feeling so close to sea level but this town has the same effect. I found it a very enjoyable place.

" The Footsteps Of Giants"

All around were the hills that inspired H.W. Tillman and George Mallory. After just a few minutes I understood why. I lamented the climbing gear in my closet at home. Still a good hike was in the cards. Finding a partner on such short notice would be problematic in any case.

" An Easy Place To Enjoy"

The town was friendly and I loved the beautiful stonework was a site to see. The alpine weather set things off so well. The main street was great for people watching.
