Travel Tips for Keswick

George Fishers

by steventilly

George Fishers is a legend amongst outdoor pursuit shops - and there are plenty of those in Keswick and the Lake District. Fishers provides serious equipment for serious walkers, climbers and so on, but even if you are just a Sunday walker you could do a lot worse than to visit this shop. Their range is extensive and the staff are experienced and knowledgeable - they can tell you what gear you will need to visit the Himalayas or the Arctic - and as well as clothing and equipment they stock rations and emergency medical supplies too

The bridge

by iandsmith

If you only had time to do one thing whilst at Keswick, this is part of what I would advise.
En route to Surprise View and Watendlath, Ashness Bridge is one of Lakeland's most idyllic scenes; a fine packhorse bridge spanning a babbling, rocky brook, with views over Derwentwater to the mighty peak of Skiddaw beyond.
This view is never forgotten and Ashness Bridge is claimed to be one of the most photographed places in the whole of the Lake District. Personally, I believe it's one of the most photographed bridges in all of England. I was there at shoulder season and there's still cars in the carpark and people queueing for the best spot to take that postcard snap from.
The scene changes magically with the seasons, and in autumn the golden hues of the trees and the bracken on the fells add a burst of colour which cannot fail to delight all those who view it.
I hope you enjoy my humble efforts at this and then you can journey further in my next tip.

Keswick - Bedlem in the middle of peace

by Galahad

Because there are so few towns in the Lake District Keswick has become a honey-pot location providing all the services. The town is very small but is never quiet, even in the winter. As you will have guessed - not for me other than to nip in and quickly negotiate my way out again.
From a VT point view, there are still quite a lot of VT entries under the wrong location as there is another Keswick in the UK check there. Hopefully this will eventually sorted out.
