For those who like to sleep under the stars campsites abound. They vary from the basic to the swish, depending on your needs.
If, like us ,you belong to the Caravan Club or Camping Club, you will find a fair few C.L.s (5 van only sites) dotted about the area. We stayed at Rusland, which is a C.L. without facilities. Very peaceful, rural retreat. 0.5 of an acre, level site.

    B.and B also available.

Nov. 2006 update: this site now has electric hook ups and prices have shot up to £8 a night with extra cars charged another 50p.

    A very friendly visiting moggie!
    Good cycling area.

4 miles to Grizedale Forest Visitor Centre.
    Windermere 3 miles away.

Steve and Susan are already part of the family here, and so we also stayed here over new year 04/05 with them. You really feel welcome here. Ian and Sue Plant, the owners make you feel home away from home.

There are about 7 modern non smoking rooms for guests in their house. All equipped with showers and toilets inside.

We deliberately chose this site because it is all hard stands and knowing how it can rain in this part of the world thought it a wise move. Oh boy, were we right!! It never really stopped raining the whole weekend (well it was October!) so we felt rather smug and extremely relieved to not be on the sopping grass. We did see a car become bogged in to the grass; the hardstandings are a tad on the small size and a car with caravan doesn't fit on.
Unfortunately, all pitches are sloping, some much worse than others and we couldn't manage to get level. All attempts to back on to the ramps proved futile which was annoying to say the least. In the end we had to be content with using my brother-in-laws lower ramps which didn't exactly level us up but it was only for two nights. In the morning we would find ourselves halfway down the bed!!! Be warned, nowhere does it say the site is sloping.
Despite the down sides, the views are nice, the location very peaceful and for this part of the world, £7 including electricity wasn't a bad price.

We, as true Brits, even had a BBQ in the torrential rain under a makeshift canopy. How crazy can you get?

Extremely peaceful, in the middle of nowhere but only a short drive from the fleshpots of Penrith and Ullswater. Popular throughout the year. By the time we left, on Sunday, the site was up to it's full quota of 5 vans. Apparently people spend an alternative Christmas here.

We managed to leave a small memento; upon our leaving, Nick managed to hit the fence around the chemical disposal point, thus demolishing it!! Whoops....

There are plenty of hotels and b&b`s dotted around this area, but one thing I noticed was that quite a lot had no vacancies. If you are planning a trip in to the Lake District it might be a good idea to try and pre book your acomodation....bear in mind that what I saw was mid week, so I guess it will be much more difficult at the weekend.
I cant really say too much on the standards of acomodation because my time there was spent camping. All the b&b`s etc etc looked very nicefrom the outside and had an average price of £25 per person per night.

The hotel is located in Dockray, which is a tiny place near Ullswater. It is a very quiet location and ideal if you like walking. It's about 5 to 10 min drive to Glenridding where you'll find a petrol station, shops, pubs, tourist info ....
There is also a bus stop near the hotel which can bring you to Keswick.

The hotel has 10 rooms (standard and premier), a pub serving good real ales and pub food, a restaurant, a lovely beer garden, and private parking.

There is free WIFI but it didn't seem to work when we were there, although the staff said they had no problems. I think they need to reset the router.
Beware, there is no mobile connection in the hotel, so it can be very lonely for some ;-)

Continental breakfast (poor) and English Breakfast (good) were only served between 8:30 and 9 am, which was not always ideal for us.

Staff were very friendly and helpful.

We didn't like our room though. We had a standard room which was very small with standard double bed filling most of the room. Our room was located near the street at almost the same level. People walking by could easily look into our room. The bathroom was tiny with no room to put anything. The tiny TV had bad reception. There was carpet everywhere (even in the bathroom) which was not vacuumed thoroughly. Not pleasant for people with dust allergies. I've read some good reviews about the premier rooms though.

We paid £69 per night incl. breakfast at the end of June. A premier room was £10 more. Prices go up during the summer season.

If I would stay here again, I would take a premier room.

    Best pitch
    by nickandchris, 4 more photos
Actually, this CL has really annoyed us since we stayed here by making it an adults only site.It now means if Philip is with us, this site is a no go area.

It's a neat and tidy little site, 0.5 of an acre, all pitches on gravel hardstands. The best views of the Cumbrian fells are from the pitch we were on, at the far end. Actually, it is all a little too swept up for us with neatly clipped grass and signs telling you what you can and can't do. The bonus were the visiting cats!!

    Electric hook ups, wc. shower.

Adults only, open all year. £7 a night.

It's situation in the quieter, western Lake District. Wonderful views and visiting cats!

Hartsop Fold is situated 2 miles from Patterdale at the head of Lake Ullswater in the heart of the English Lake District
A small chalet park (12 chalets) not far off the road between Windermere and Patterdale, just after the Kirkstone Pass. The chalets are of Scandanavian model and well equipped. The bed linen is supplied in the high season but you must bring your own towels. There are no shops in the park and the nearest shop is the little shop in Patterdale. It can be reached from Windermere -but you then have to go over the Kirkstone Pass or from Penrith (about 17 kilometres to the north)

quiet, comfortable with lovely views for the balconies, easy for walking in the area. If you are lucky (as I was one morning) you can see deer close by.

A friendly B&B right in the middle of Keswick. My room was small (especially the bath), hot but comfortable. And I finally had my own telly to watch my beloved English TV comedy shows :)

Great breakfasts! You get to choose exactly what you want - so I could enjoy my English breakfast without having to worry that some of the tasty food touches the baked beans (which I hate)!!

In my room in the B&B I found the smallest bathroom I have ever seen. I couldn't believe how small it was. If somebody taller than me went to the toilet I bet he'd have to leave the door open when using the toilet - otherwise his knees wouldn't fit in the room.

There even was a shower in here - I couldn't believe my eyes ;) It's hidden to the right of the toilet!

After three nights camping we needed a change so for our final two nights in the Lake District we stayed in a B&B near Grasmere. This was far more expensive than camping but it did mean we were warm at night and that we didn’t have to face the prospect of an uncomfortable night in a tent after a long day’s hiking.

We chose Grasmere as it’s in a good central location and was close to the hike we planned to do the following day, in the Langdale Peaks. Banerigg House is about 1mile outside Grasmere on the road to Ambleside and it easy to miss as there is only a small sign outside the house. It’s very close to the Wordsworth museum at Dove Cottage and the town of Grasmere is within easy reach. The lake is across the road from the house and most of the rooms have good views over the lake.

The family running the B&B are very friendly and we enjoyed our stay here immensely. It costs 30 pounds per person per night and all rooms are en suite. Included in the price is a fantastic breakfast. You’ll need to do a lot of hiking to work it off!
