Iris and a display from Peter Rabbit
Hi, we will travel to Windermere (Lake District) in Mid August (coming from Dubai) with a 3 year old son and will be staying at Craig Manor Hotel. What's the best way to go to Windermere from Kendal (arriving there from Cheltenham) ? Also, planning to take Full Day 9 Lakes Phtographers tour from Millennium Travel Lake District Tours. Any one knows how good the tour is ? Also, how easy it is to commute in the buses ? Are taxis easily available in Winderemere and Lake District in general ? Sorry, a lot of questions but none of our friends ever traveled to Lake district.
will give you lots of useful information about getting around the area. You can easily get a bus to Kendal and other places. Windermere also has a railway station.
will give you downloadable bus timetables for the area.
In the UK there are taxis and there are mini-cabs. Mini-cabs have to be ordered by phone, whereas taxis are allowed to park on the street (at 'taxi ranks') for hire. You may find both, but mini-cabs are more usual in rural areas. Your hotel will certainly be able to get local firms for you, but there is also a list of firms here:
I know nothing of the tour, but I doubt it will be anything less than worthwhile: the Lake District is beautiful.
From Kendal, you can take the 555 or 556 bus to Windermere. The distance is around 9 miles, so you might consider taking a taxi (as you have a child and baggage), although it will be more expensive. You will find taxis outside Kendal station or you could phone a local mini-cab firm, ask for a quote and/or book in advance.
Taxi and mini-cab rates in the UK are set by local councils. They must be licensed and have meters.
There is a regular train service from Kendal to Windermere ( see www.transpennineexpress.co.uk). If you are using the train from Cheltenham your route would be Cheltenham Spa - Birmingham New Street (change) - to Oxenholme (change) and finally to Kendall. ( see www.thetrainline.co.uk) for details.
Lakeland buses - the best information is at http://www.golakes.co.uk/information/thedms.aspx?dms=11&groupid=14&catid=57&mstat=0&lstat=1&easi=true
There are plenty of taxis in the Windermere area and also in the major towns such as Keswick, Kendal , Ambleside and so on.
