More about Damson Dene Hotel
Very good value.
Just back from 3 night stay at Damson Dene. Hotel was quiet and clean and leisure facilities were very good. I was concerned before my break after reading reviews on this hotel, but we were very pleased with our stay. The food in the evening was excellent, some problems with the staff though as they did not speak very good english, didnt even understand custard or eggs! Breakfast was plentiful but cold. On the whole I thought the break was good value, but the breakfast needs to be warmer and the staff need to understand english, would go back again.
we are just home from the damson dene and havin read the reviews on this hotel my boyfriend and i didnt know what to expect! when we arrived the staff at reception were very welcoming and we were put in room 1 which has a 4 poster bed and jacuzzi. The room was clean and we didnt have any complaints about it, we got ready for dinner and felt a bit out of place as we were the only young couple there, the food was excellent and the staff were quick at serving! we checked out the pool and gym area the next day, these were clean and there was nobody about to bother us! Apart from feeling a bit young to be at the hotel, i can safely say this hotel is fantastic value for money and would recommend it to anyone!
Delighted at the Damson Dene
We have visited the Damson Dene numerous times and do love the relaxed atmosphere and location of this Lakeland hotel. the staff were, as usual, helpful and polite and the food was superb.
We booked in for the New Year with our two children (eleven months and five).
The beauty of this hotel is that if you want to have a peaceful dinner in the restaurant you can put the youngsters to bed and get a good reception from the baby monitor on your table in the dining room - wherever your room is in the hotel.
This does make for a relaxing time so you can wind down after taking the kids on a trek around the hills and valleys or letting them wear off their excess energy in the lovely hotel pool.
The three night break over new year was not cheap. At £285 per person you could fly abroad, but who wants all the hassle of airports and strikes. For our money we got an excellent seven course dinner on New Year's Eve, with a good disco and there was a good crowd of guests and locals in enjoying the festivities which made the evening go with a swing.
We actually let our five year old stay up until midnight, and the staff and guests were great with him, helping him collect the helium balloons and party poppers.
All the food was well cooked, tasty and well presented - waiting staff were reasonably helpful, but as mentioned they have limited English, but we encountered no problems, even when getting ice-packs from the kitchen
Overall, this is probably one of the friendlier hotels in the area. The midweek and out of season packages are good value, and the hotel accepts dogs at no extra charge. Our Lab enjoyed the experience as much as us...we have alrady booked for next new year and hopefully will try and get a few days in summer.
We chose this hotel because of its good weekend deal (2 nights DB&B £99 pp) and location. I would agree with some of the other reviewers that the property is pretty shabby. Our bathroom didn't even seem to have been looked at during our stay - towels weren't changed and bath wasn't rinsed out. You could write your name in the dust on top of the TV. The restaurant food on the first night of our stay was well below the standard I had expected - I didn't realise you could go so badly wrong with a creme caramel (it tasted of fish & sour milk). The food on the second night, however, was superb. Breakfast was very good, with a nice selection, although on both mornings we waited over 20 mins to be asked if we wanted tea, coffee & toast - a minor mutiny was started by another table who helped themselves to hot drinks. The staff were friendly, although most had very little English. Leisure facilities were good, although full of small children while we were there. Overall, we had a good stay, but they could do better.
A Pleasant Break
My wife and I enjoyed just two nights earlier this month at Damson Dene. I had come across it since I had been searching for a mid priced hotel in the Lakes ( where we have stayed many times in different hotels) that accepted dogs. Not only do they accept dogs, at no extra charge- but I was delighted to note that in their brochure the breed of dog in a picture was the same as ours. So far so good yet I confess to being somewhat concerned after reading some of the other reviews a week before our visit.
While respecting their opinons, one must speak as you find after all, we could find nothing in our actual experience that in any way matched the negative ones of others. Yet our antennae were up of course!! The staff were without exception welcoming, helpful, approachable and seemed happy in their roles. The food was good, plentiful and priced correctly: the breakfasts are as good as any we have had any where in the world as, when you are dealing with such items as sausages, eggs and the like, they should be. The room we had on the first night overlooked the garden where there is a damson tree and a small ornamental pool. Fitness centre spot on too. We will return.
Awful, Dated & completely Unappealing.
Dreadful from Check-in to departure. Dated room with dire decor and 70s bathroom with an excuse for a shower. Appalling restaurant serving terrible food - sent back steak that was over-cooked with a curdled cream sauce and chips that were burnt.
We were due to stay for 3 nights but checked out after 2; my fiancee in tears as there was allegedly no manager available to speak to regarding the bill which I said we should refuse to pay without some reduction.
This kind of experience is unacceptable for an establishment in such an idyllic location where a sellers' market attracts people who are willing to pay for quality.
DON'T stay here!! Look at either The Punchbowl or The Mason's Arms where we moved to and found a real treasure - lovely modern rooms, great pub food and friendly English speaking staff. This Hotel effortlessly delivered better value for money, assuring them our repeat business.
Good value for money
My Husband & I have just enjoyed a two night midweek break at the Damson Dene. We paid £99 each for 2 nights DBB.The Hotel was nice , the room and bathroom were spotless. The staff were lovely, especially the girls waiting on in the dining room who were very pleasant . The leisure facilities were good, pool, sauna, steam room & gym ,as these are used by paying members too ,as well as residents ,they are of a good standard.
The food was excellent , we enjoyed both the evenings meals we had there, and the breakfast was also superb.
There was no entertainment on at night, and the hotel is definately for a quiet break, rather than a fun packed one. This suited us though ,and we felt that all in all it was very good value for money. We would certainly stay there again.
gone downhill since we last stayed
stayed here a few times in the past and had an enjoyable stay. booked up a two night stay with dinner.
room was ok nothing special leisure facilities still good. main problem was that the hotel now does weddings and we weren't told there was a wedding on the saturday. as a result the restaurant was shut an the bar and we were put in a small room.
the food used to be good but it was awful, waiting to be served and for wine for 20 mins after getting starter. neer asked how food was. it was terrible. obiously kept warm whilst we were waiting for wine to go with starter. so the sauce had a skin on it and everything else was very dry.
checked out after one nght and went elsewhere. not even asked why checkig out, staff just not bothered.
Loved it !
Hubby and I stayed there for a few days get away and loved it ! - The service was quick and efficient, the room was beautiful (four poster bed) the food was wonderful and the location was perefect only 4 miles from windermere. I had read previous reviews of this hotel and was a bit worried however I found all to be well. I would recommend this hotel to anyone. Looking forward to staying here again
We arrived at Damson Dene on a perfectly sunny day and had a wonderful stay throghout. The bedroom was a little small but the view over the fields was magnificent.
The food was excellent every single day and the staff, although they seemed slightly over worked were efficient, smiling and never to busy to stop and have a chat or help you out.
We will be returning to Damson Dene in the near future. Thouroughly reccommended to anyone, espiecally if you have pets, they are very pet friendly and have a large garden and duck pond, which our little dog loved also.
