wonderful!

i took my partner to stay at gilpin lodge as a Christmas present....and im so glad i did! We could not fault anything, all the staff were pleasant & friendly, the food fantastic, the room great , very clean. The lodge itself was relaxing and the grounds wonderful, the rooms have cd players and cd's which is a great idea, books and lovely molton brown bath products!. We cant wait to go back in the Summer to stay in the garden suits as they have hot tubs. We would definatley recommend this place as its only 2 miles from Windermere.
Michelin half star

Our 2nd visit to this special hotel, the setting and the welcome as always are first rate. We stayed in the Garden Rooms which very well fitted out but lack broadband and cable digital TV. These rooms are as new and individually decorated. This time we were somewhat disappointed with the food in the week; the selection andchoices were somewhat limited and the portions for weekdays very much smaller in marked contrast to the weekend meals & service. One night we started the meal at 20:000hrs and were still in the restaraunt at 22:30hrs The hotel may have reached the stage of trading on itspast or was the Michelin chef having an off night or two. Our advice book for a wekend ie no more than 2 nights.
The competition in the Lakedistrict is improving and may well be in the overtaking lane, come on Gilpin Lodge.
Absolutely Top Class

My husband and I treated ourselves for our 20th wedding anniversary. We booked the Garden Suite and we were just thrilled when we were shown the room. The comfort was just top class, the Hot Tub was just wonderful, to walk out in 0 degrees to hot steaming water with a cold glass of wine on the side made it so much fun. The staff were very friendly and very accommodating, and the food was just out of this world. We loved every single minute of it. We treated ourselves to a Massage and that was just so relaxing, a husband and wife team who were very good indeed. It was the first time we had left two teenagers at home on their own but walking into Gilpin Lodge took away our apprehension and we had the time of our lives. I would most definately recommend going for the ultimate romantic break away.......

Half a Star!!!!!

Just returned from yet another fantastic stay at Gilpin Lodge. We have stayed in a variety of rooms and for the first time, we stayed in the garden rooms. I really enjoyed relaxing in the hot tub on a freezing cold clear night gazing at the stars! As normal everything about the place oozes class without the stuffiness and pretentiousness of other lakeland hotels in the same class. The management welcome you as if you have come home and all the staff are friendly. Chris Meredith's cooking is completely worthy of the Michelin Star, but we think GL should have been starred years ago. I feel "LakesLeader" must have had something else niggling at them before they arrived. It is quite simply the best of all the Three Rosetted/One Michelin Starred Hotels in the Lakes and we should know, we've stayed in all of them on numerous occasions! Soon to be Hoteliers ourselves, I am not afraid to say we will be pinching a few tips from our experiences of this magnificent place. How anyone can leave disappointed is beyond me. Keep up the good work and roll on the fourth Rosette/2nd Michelin Star
Delightful place to stay in Windermere
by TripAdvisor Member loulops
My husband and I have just returned from a wonderful few days in the Lake District. We stayed at Gilpin Lodge, a delightful small hotel in a perfect location just outside Bowness-on Windermere. The brochure and dvd do not do the hotel justice. It is a beautiful country house decorated and furnished beautifully, and oozes charm and warmth. The staff are welcoming, friendly and bending over backwards to be helpful - service with a genuine smile, so rare in the UK these days. Our bedroom (Buttermere, named after the exquisite lake) was ever so pretty, split level with a four poster bed and three steps down to a spacious sitting area with views over the gardens. Egyptian cotton bedlinen, gleaming and spotlessly clean bathroom, Molton Brown toiletries, shortbread on the tea tray, a selection of appropriate books to read - every detail has been carefully attended to. Dinner in one of the four initmate dining rooms was a Michelin-starred treat (ending wih a to-die-for banana souffle with hot chocolate sauce!), and breakfast no less superb. The weather was not up to walking so we took advice from the owners and did a planned 30-mile drive which took in the most breathtaking scenery we have ever seen anywhere. A meander around the art shops of Bowness-on-Windermere and the fudge/shortbread shops of Grasmere are a must, and we would
highly recommend a meal at The Porthole (Ash Street, Bownedd-on-Windermere) - the best sticky toffee pudding I have ever tasted!

We have visited Gilpin 5 times over the last ten years and it just get's better and better.......... I cannot believe it is only ranked 5th on the tripadvisor ratings. Hello Hello where have you been? This small hotel may not have Lake Windermere views but it's gardens are spectacular and very well maintained as is the hotel which is like a tardis a very luxurious tardis. The rooms are well appointed and spotlessly clean, the staff are very helpful and friendly and even remember their guests who only ever seem to stay for one night {not by choice}. We haven't stayed in the new garden rooms yet, we have viewed them "thank's Zoe`"and plan to stay in one of them on our next visit, we promise we will not wait two years.Last but not least the food is fantastic and truely deserves it's Michelin star. We believe our evening meal was prepared by the sous chef ,well done! By the way breakfast is exceptional just don't have too many Calvados the night before and you will really enjoy a marvellous breakfast as I did on this visit.
a jewel amongst thorns!

after a recent awful experience in another lake district hotel we were very dubious about coming away for a valentine treat. we were soooo... glad we did the gilpin is a wonderful oasis of calm and we felt that we had been looked after beautifully.we had a classic room overlooking the gardens and it was tastefully decorated with lovely molton brown toiletries in the bathroom.we could have spent our one night just parked in the spacious room but we ventured to the restaurant and what a lovely treat it was the food was to die for and the service was impecable and yes it was a bit pricey but it was well worth it for this kind of luxury.
it was lovely to be woken by birdsong in the morning and we chose to have our breakfast in the room boy what a breakfast it was my porridge and delecious smoothie were just the thing after a night of indulgences. my partner raved about the breakfast and especially liked how the chefs were accomadating with the cooking of the eggs etc.
overall we had a lovely time and it has restored our faith in the hotel world

I arranged a surprise 3 night stay for my husband's 40th birthday after reading the tripadvisor reviews & looking at the website. We had a fabulous time & stayed in one of the new garden suites. The room was fantastic - have a look at the website, it shows you exactly what you are getting. Very modern, spacious & tastefully done - a real credit to the owners who have done a great job.
We had our own hot-tub. Only advice I would give is to say check which of the rooms is the most private as some hot-tubs can be overlooked. We had a problem with the hot-tub when we arrived because it wasn't warm enough but Barney (one of the family owners ) got on to it straight away & it was soon fixed.
The bedroom had a tv/ dvd & seating area and also a separate dressing area where you could also make coffee/ tea. The mini bar had a jug of fresh milk which was topped up twice daily - a lovely touch. The room was serviced twice daily. We indulged ourselves with a massage (the therapists came to the room) which was very relaxing.
The whole hotel was immaculately clean & all the staff were very courteous. My husband had worried that it would be 'stuffy' but it wasn't at all & the guests ranged from those in their 20's to their 70's.
It has several small dining rooms, all beautifully decorated & furnished. We were given different tables each mealtime which enabled us to experience each room. All were lovely. The meals were delicious. I had read an earlier review about small portion sizes. I really can't agree with that. There were so many sumptious courses that there would be enough food even for the largest of appetites.
We were lucky with the weather, but really I wouldn't have minded if it had rained all the time as our room was a private sanctuary & I could have stayed there much longer.
It isn't cheap, but if you want a special treat then I can thoroughly recommend this as the place to go.
A Little gem but......

We stayed at this hotel recently for my partners birthday. We had 3 rooms including 2 garden suites which I have to say compared very well with ANY hotel room we have ever stayed in. Fantastic design, every comfort and the outdoor hot tubs were superb. They even had fresh milk in the fridge - a mark of true quality in our book. The management Barney in particular were so friendly and welcoming. Quite special I'd say.
We very much enjoyed the food at this hotel and its Michelin Star for food is well deserved. There do however have some service issues and service is not really of Michelin Star standard - certainly compared to others we have eaten in. At times is was chaotic for example, on one morning we were asked 5 different times by 3 different people if we wanted coffee or tea. That gets irritating. At diner one evening service was quite poor. Chaotic with too many people involved it seemed that no one was in fact responsible for our table. The fact that we waited 50 mins for our appetisers after we were seated really spoiled the evening and the meal. To be fair they were apologetic and service on our last night was much better.
All in all we loved this hotel and it rates very well with many 5 star hotels we have visited. Would we return, well yes probably everything but the service was great but that would put us off I must say. If they can get that right then they will have s superb gem of a hotel and one we'd would then love to stay at more often.
fabulous afternoon tea
by TripAdvisor Member jmh61
Our family had the most wonderful afternoon tea here on Easter Monday to celebrate my dad's 70th birthday. The staff were excellent and didn't rush us even though we were still occupying a corner of the lounge at 6.30 pm when people were coming in for pre-dinner drinks. An unusual touch were the potted shrimpsand chunky toast they brought before the sandwiches (smoked salmon, cream cheese and cucumber). All cakes etc were home made and vanilla creamy mousse topped with chocolate sauce served in individual little glasses were special. A perfect, quintissentially English way to spend an afternoon!
