Lovely break

by TripAdvisor Member JAW476

We have just come back from a very nice stay at Hillthwaite House. Room, food and staff all excellent, lovely view of the lake from room 12. Pity we could not stay longer and sample the pool. We would not hesitate book again.

lovely

by TripAdvisor Member will0thewisp

We stayed at the hotel for a two night break in October. We chose this hotel for the main reason that we were allowed to take our dog. We booked the break 5 days before we were due to arrive, we were told when we booked it that we would have to change rooms for the second night, this wasnt a problem, I was assured that the staff would have everthing arranged for us.

When we arrived our room wasnt ready but we were given a complmentary pot of tea and biscuits while we waited. Within 20 minutes our room was ready. We were in room 2 for our first night. The room was lovely and clean, full size bathroom with jacuzzi, double bed, t.v (with a chosen sky film) and tea/coffee making facilities. We were the first room of the sitting area (no noise as through a door). You are given the evening menu a couple of hourse before. There are five course, and although ech one isnt huge, the taste was excellent, by the time you get to your fifth course you are full. After tea, we sat in the conservatory, the dog is allowed in here, we had drinks from the bar, and played cards. When we wanted to go into the bar or the sitting room we to the dog back to the room, the hotel are happy for you to do this.

Following morning breakfast time. Full array of breakfast food, from cereal and yoghurt, to a full english or kippers. All freshly cooked. We left for a day trip, when we arrived back our room had changed, we were given our new key. Room 35. All our belongings as promised moved over, the room was huge, luxury leather sleigh bed, huge bathroom, lots of storage all in the leather look. There was also a day bed. The only complaint I would have is that the heating pipes can get noisy in the night. Evening meal again lovely. We will be going back. The staff were fantastic. They made us including our staffy dog more than welcome. Thank you all.

Weekend Wonder

The weekend was a Birthday treat for my husband. What a birthday everything was perfect, So much attention was given to
detail. The food was excellent so was the staff, the room was also very comfortable and very clean. Well done Hillthwaite.

40th birthday break disaster

by TripAdvisor Member ang40

what a disaster. I booked a five night break as a surprise for my husbands 40th Birthday in Feb 2006. When we arrived the whole appearance of the hotel looked run down and shabby and the interior was no better. We were shown to our bedroom which was small and looked unclean. The four poster bed was far too large for the room. The wine glasses were not polished and looked dusty. The furniture was stained and the paint work was grubby. My husband and I decided not to stay and checked out. we even lost our deposit. What a dissapointment.

Excellent hotel, friendly staff

by TripAdvisor Member prestonlady

We were only staying for one night, but the hotel couldn't have been better, lovely rooms, excellent reception rooms and very efficient and friendly staff. Would recommend highly - shame we weren't staying longer so we could have used the leisure facilities - maybe next time!

Bit of a let-down!

by TripAdvisor Member Lozloz

I booked a two night trip for myself and my boyfriend after reading some reviews from this website and because the hotel brochure looked so inviting,

I booked one of the lake view jacuzzi rooms, i fully expected the decor to match the pitcures on the hotel's website and brochure - sadly this was not the case. We arrived and on first inspection we were pleased - the exterior of the hotel and the aspect to the lake was lovely. However on entering the hotel i was unhappy. The conservatory area was used for people smoking - so we walked through a fog of cigarette smoke, to then be confronted with a smell of wet dog. Personally, i don't mind hotels that allow pets, but i didn't expect it to smell of dog so much! To it's credit though, at night time the hotel did smell fresh and for that i was pleased.

Food: Breakfast was lovely and the service very attentive - couldn't fault that at all. A+!

Dinner - very mixed. First night had a fab three course meal and lovely wine, lovely service in the bar and the staff again were all very friendly. Second night, i don't know if the chef had gone a bit 'experimental' with the menu - but the dishes were appalling. Both main course meat dishes were smothered in fruit sauces, which could not be escaped, They were overpowering and neither myself or my partner could eat more then a mouthful. Why ruin good food with sauces that do not enhance the meal? There was one option (available at a supplement of £8?) of steak, but I felt if i had paid for dinner i should be able to chose something from the menu that was edible without paying extra.

I have to say i didn't complain about the meal - perhaps something could have been done if i had, so i will never know. I suspect they would have tried to accommodate us with another option.

Bedrooms - Decor like a Granny's bedroom - jacuzzi bath not exactly romantic as it is in a cramped bathroom with the excelair whirring round, very noisy and cramped. ergh. (not what i had in mind!) If you want nice neutral decor - perhaps the most expensive rooms have it?

Staff - A+ Very friendly, good service

Location - great - has views of the lake - but personally i would have preferred to be slightly closer.

Overall - quite pricey for what you get - had i paid half the price i wouldn't have minded so much about all the niggles..

Excellent break

by TripAdvisor Member Yorkieinexile

My wife and stayed in the hotel for a two day late Birthday/Anniversary break in Februaury and had a wonderful couple of days.
The room was comfortable, clean and very well equipped, with a superb view across the Fells.
Staff and food could not be faulted, the Staff were friendly and efficient without being overbearing and the food, with a five course meal each evening, was superb.
We will return.

what a find

by TripAdvisor Member hazypod

Just returned home from this wonderful relaxing hotel. The food is fabulous and the service first class. This hotel has a bonus of a lovely warm swimming pool very nice when it's snowing outside. The hotel is very clean and room 16 is lovely for that romantic break. First time at this hotel will definately return.

Nice hotel, pity about the price

by TripAdvisor Member buv1955

My wife and I stayed at this hotel as a gift from our children. We were shown the brochure before we arrived and were expecting a much higher standard than what greeted us. Not that the brochure lied but overstated what was on offer. The location of he hotel - about a 20 minute walk from Bowness gives decent views of the area, but limited ones of the lake.
Our room was very cramped - described as a double lake view room with jacussi. There was room for only one person at a time to pass the bottom of the bed.
The food was excellent and no complaints there. The staff were very friendly but the general manager did have an air of Basil Faulty!
We have stayed in hotels all over the world from 5 star Park Hyatt, Shangria La to Bed and Breakfast inns in New England and this hotel is one of the most expensive and overated
