Travel Tips for Ashbourne

Hiking boots and waterproofs are a must!

by luckiday

If you plan to go hiking/walking anywhere in the UK then heres your must check list. Hiking boots, gaitors, waterproof trousers and jacket (a back pack to be able to remove and carry this lot if it's hot is a good idea too). If it's winter time then obviously warm clothing, gloves and hat, and if you want the full kit the only thing that's left is a stick.

Sudbury Hall

by Kettleman

Sudbury Hall it situated just off the recently built A50 road that links the M1 south of Derby to the M6 around Stoke on Trent.

Following the signs takes you into the car park that leaves you a short walk to the hall itself.

As you cross the road the main Hall is obscured by trees but the stable block is visible on the left. This houses the shop and cafe.

Inside the main hall you are directed through a series of rooms with intricate carving.

The staircase and many of the carved door frames and panels are all in wood and were carved by a small team of carvers.

In facr, in the records the staircase wascarved at the princely sum of £112.

Unfortunately it is forbidden to take photos and videos inside the hall but of course cameras accidentally take pictures....

The house belonged to the Vernon family and was built towards the end of the 17th Century by Geroge Vernon.

It's most fascinating feature apart from the carving is the golden orb on top of the dome on the roof. This is used to be used as a beacon for travellers.
