Travel Tips for Bakewell
IT'S NOT A TART, IT'S NOT A TART, ITS NOT A TART
by DAO
It's A Bakewell PUDDING! Yes, there is a Bakewell Tart, but it’s the Bakewell Pudding that is actually famous. The famous pudding was made by accident when an inexperienced cook at the White Horse (now gone) misread his instructions in the 1860’s. He poured egg mixture over the jam instead of mixing it in the pastry and what should have been a tart was now a pudding. Bakewell puddings can be bought at several shops in the town centre and even shipped worldwide.
The rest is, as they say, history.
The Bakewell Pudding - The Recipes
by suvanki
Although this recipe is accredited to Mrs Greaves, it was her nameless maid that invented this dish. (Please see previous tip for more info)
There are many variations of Bakewell Pudding, some with almonds, some without. One of Mrs Greaves recipes includes Mashed potato!
1860 recipe-
20 eggs, yolks of 12
1lb clarified butter
1lb fine sugar
all mixed together and poured upon the preserve in a puff paste. Bake in a quick oven in tins.
A recipe for family sized pudding -
Line an 8" flan dish with puff pastry and spread with strawberry jam.
mix 4oz butter, 4oz sugar, 4 eggs and 2 extra whites.
Bake for 30 minutes , Gas mark 5, or 190 degrees centigrade.
Eat hot or cold- Enjoy!
Hoping to have a photo soon - ish!
Hartington
by Britannia2
Hrtington is a small Peak Distrcit village south of Bakewell ( go through Monyash). A pleasant village to stop in and wander around and look at the ducks on the pond or have a cup of tea and a scone in one of several tea shops. There is a very good cheese shop with some unusual cheeses and an outdoor clothing shop that looked interesting if you require that sort of thing.
Walking the Monsal Trail
by stevezero
The Monsal Trail runs for some 15kms from near Bakewell to 5kms from Buxton. For the most part it follows the route of the old Midland Railway, although there are some deviations, owing to the stretches where the tunnels were. These have now been closed off for safety reasons.
At Monsal head you will find one of the Peak Districts gems - the view down Monsal Dale. This is a good starting point for a variety of walks but note that the way down (and therefore back up) is very steep.
There is a car park at Monsal Head for 150, and also a pub, cafe, and hotel.
Near Ashford in the Water
Access is via the A6 Buxton to Bakewell Road, then taking the turning towards Chesterfield, along the A6020.
Well Dressing
by Arm-Chair-Hero
Situated around Bakewell are many small old villages, most of wich consist of maybe one or two local village pubs and perhaps a small corner shop. At around the end of August a lot of the small villages for example Tideswell have Well Dressing. These are pictures or scenes made up from flowers. This tradition dates back to the pagan times and is well worth a look if you see Well Dressing advertised whilst on your travels. Chances are you wont spend all day looking at these but it is worth a quick look if passing.
You will see hand made advertisements on the road side whilst driving giving you the dates and location. The villages are quite easy to find as long as you have an AA map etc etc.
