Anytime I stop overnight in Exeter this is my hotel of choice - provided I can get a room at the right price! The hotel used to be called "The Rougemont" until a few (ish) years ago and was starting to look a little jaded, but has been seriously revamped and rebranded simply as The Thistle Exeter. It's not often that putting a corporate identity on a place works, but here it does. For a city centre hotel it has everything you would require: nice rooms, 24hrs service, good staff, and perfect location for central Exeter. The food is reasonably good, breakfast buffet can be a bit hit nor miss, just got to get the timing right when things are coming out fresh, but then that's the same most places. But the service is excellent and nothing is a problem, If your not happy with something tell one of the staff and things will be sorted. Definetely recommended. Use the website and advance bookings can be very reasonable, I've stayed here for as little as £28.50 b&b, though the norm is at least twice that.
From the outside the hotel looks a little run down, but once inside it has a lot of character. From the entrance hallway with its pair of bronzes, into the reception area - where you can just sit and have a coffee - wooden panelling abounds. The residents lounge - just order from reception what you want - with its marble fireplace. The staircase and its stained glass window. There's even an internet station! This is a nice hotel. It can be expensive but deals are there to be done! This hotel would never be on anyone's list of "Best Hotels in Town" but it does have its advantages, charmless though they may be. The hotel itself doesn't even attempt to claim a place in the "destination" catagory but if you need an inexpensive bed for the night in Exeter and everywhere else is full (or too pricey) then The Great Western can usually be booked even at the last minute. Rooms are a bit scruffy and basic, though are immaculately clean, but there is a all-pervading cooking smell in the rambling corridors. The en-suite bathrooms are tiny corner additions and in every room I have stayed in have a shower rather than a bath but the water is hot and shower pressure OK.
The two main advantages of the hotel are that: 1. It's a short walk from St David's railway station. and 2. It does have a very good selection of reasonably-priced beer! Leave a Comment

We stayed here because it was relatively cheap, and quite close to Andrew's family, who we were visiting. Otherwise, we wouldn't normally stay in a place like this. The hotel is situated in a fairly new business park on the outskirts of the city, close to the motorway. There is a reasonably good daytime bus service to the business park and to the Park & Ride just across the road. An evening taxi ride from Exeter St David's station cost about £10. The hotel is very new, and the rooms are small but very clean and comfortable. The complimentary breakfast was probably the worst we have ever had. Vile reconstituded fruit juice, weak coffee, rubbery croissants. Although we booked a special "pre-payed" weekend rate on their website - £49 a night for a twin room - they quoted £70/night on the room card when we checked in. They seemed happy enough to correct this when we pointed it out on the first day, but when we came to check out they tried charging us £70 for the second night. Again, they didn't seem to have a problem correcting this, but very poor nonetheless.

This 'boutique' hotel just outside Exeter's city walls promises so much, but doesn't really manage to deliver on any of it, except the food. Converted from a former 1908 brick-built hospital (the West of England Eye Hospital), this is not a particularly comfortable or cosy hotel. Despite the attempts at arty Catalan-inspired decor (hence the name), there are constant reminders (intended and unintended) that this is an old hospital. The radiators, the high ceilings, the cold institutional pale green and off-white gloss paint, the stained wood flooring. And we are not talking about "stained wood" here - this is wood flooring with stains on it (and yes, some of it did look like blood stains). We found it difficult to feel comfortable or relaxed anywhere in this hotel, other than the restaurant - which is in a totally new extension. First impressions are not good, as the hotel reception is nothing more than a couple of tables stuck round a corner inside the main entrance. We thought that it was just a conference registration desk. Last impressions (checking-out) were not good either as the hotel tried to overcharge us by £40.00. I don't think that it was deliberate, but the complicated way in which they calculated our bill meant that we had to sit down with a calculator to work out whether they had got it right (which they hadn't). To cap it all, they apologised for the delay in settling our bill, but did not apologise for trying to overcharge us. We would not stay at this hotel again, and I would not recommend it to anyone else, other than for a short stay where you are not paying and there is nothing else available. Certainly don't stay here if you want a nice romantic weekend or anything like that. However, the restaurant - Cafe Paradiso - is rather good. The breakfast offering is very good quality, and original, with things like baked apples on offer. However, you do have to pay extra for cooked options (like eggs or bacon) if you are on a "continental" breakfast rate (eg the weekend offer). We also had dinner there one night and it was very good. The smoked haddock fishcakes were wonderful, and the vodka & white chocolate sorbet was amazing.
Former eye hospital. Funky decor. Rather good restaurant Leave a Comment
