Functional Rather Than Palatial

Good (3.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on June 26, 2006

This hotel would never be on anyone's list of "Best Hotels in Town" but it does have its advantages, charmless though they may be.

The hotel itself doesn't even attempt to claim a place in the "destination" catagory but if you need an inexpensive bed for the night in Exeter and everywhere else is full (or too pricey) then The Great Western can usually be booked even at the last minute.

Rooms are a bit scruffy and basic, though are immaculately clean, but there is a all-pervading cooking smell in the rambling corridors. The en-suite bathrooms are tiny corner additions and in every room I have stayed in have a shower rather than a bath but the water is hot and shower pressure OK.

Unique Quality: The two main advantages of the hotel are that:

1. It's a short walk from St David's railway station.

and

2. It does have a very good selection of reasonably-priced beer!

Directions: to your left as you leave the station
