Travel Tips for Exeter

lovely little pub

by nut_meg

Just up from the Quay is the most gorgeous little pub; The Hour Glass. Lovely little traditional pub with warm welcoming atmosphere. Little things like matches on bricks for the smokers, two little cats/kittens resident that like to purr around drinkers and also sleep in ornamental bird cages on the window sill. Decorated in Laura Ashley style georgian wallpaper. Meant to be really nice food downstairs, but very busy and as of yet have not managed to get a table there yet! Get to it from the quay (walking up Colleton Hill) or from town (walking down Topsham Road).

Exeter Cathedral

by amyLbrown2002

This cathedral is gorgeous - they all are in England! Built in Gothic style. The Cathedral is open to visitors from 9.30am-5pm.

The Cathedral relies entirely on voluntary donations for its upkeep and running costs.
We therefore recommend that all adult visitors make a donation of £3.50 towards their visit.

Free guided tours take place from March to October at the following times:

Monday to Friday, 11.00am, 12.30pm* and 2.30pm
Saturday, 11am and 12.30pm*
Sunday, 1.30pm

* only during July, August and September

Annuellers House

by freya_heaven

The Annuellers hose was built in 1528. Its purpose was to house priests who worked in the chapels of Exeter Cathedral, which is only a couple of hundred meters away, if that.

There have been recent excavations of the site & lots of pottery & old tools found, which are now in display in glass "doors" around the site. Entrance is free. The house is effctively a ruin, I am not sure if it is was bombed during the war or has just been left to decompose of its own accord, I rather think it is the first option because there are many wonderfully kept Tudor & Elizabethan properties in this area.

Exeter

"Exeter Cathedral"

Should you visit Exeter Cathedral, you will be struck by its beauty and antiquity. The imposing Norman towers dating from the early 12th Century were retained when Bishop Bronescombe, influenced by the magnificent new Gothic (Early English) cathedral at Salisbury, decided on a grandiose rebuilding in 1270. The work took nearly a Century but resulted in a wonderful Cathedral Church in Decorated Gothic style, prompting Bishop Grandisson (1327-69) to write to Pope John XXII praising its splendours.
