Our Rental Car in front of The Spinney by Bwana_Brown, 3 more photos Bearing in mind our unfortunate experience of the previous night in 'Bradford-on-Avon' as we searched in the dark for 90 minutes to find lodgings, this time (with dusk falling), we pulled into the first B&B we saw on the outskirts of Barnstaple as we drove in from Exmoor National Park. This time we were in luck, the owners had no other guests staying there that evening so we had our choice of their four guest bedrooms. Rather than pay 56 GBP for an ensuite, we opted for a room with a double bed, shared bathroom and breakfast for 46 GBP (US$80). The elegant Spinney building dates from about 1750 and was at one time the Rectory of the small community of Shirwell. Several additions and alterations have been made to the main building over the centuries enabling it today to provide unique, spacious and comfortable accommodation. Situated in over an acre of grounds, with extensive lawns and woodlands,The Spinney enjoys far reaching views over the typical Devon patchwork fields towards the heights of Exmoor only a few miles distant. This building was once part of the Chichester inheritance, with the famous solo-around-the-world sailor Sir Francis Chichester being buried nearby in the parish church.
The rooms are heated by natural gas and are very comfortably furnished (see my second photo). Even with a shared bathroom, our room came with it's own sink and mirror. It was also equipped with colour television and tea/coffee making facilities. There is a separate lounge for guests use and ample parking within the grounds. Because the proprieter, Mr. Richard Pelling is also a chef, he also runs a licenced restaurant providing dinners to order using fresh local produce where possible. In our case, after three straight mornings of 'The Full English Breakfast', we opted for a light breakfast of meusli and strawberry yoghurt, followed by scrambled eggs on toast with tea (see the third photo). It was just what we needed to start the day off! The final photo shows a rear view of the B&B with a view out over the landscape. Lee bay hotel by Igraine Its a miracle that the touroperator found this hotel it was very off the road in a tiny place.
The food was marvellous here. A great example of how good english food can be. A three course breakfast and dinner from wich i liked the dessert tray the best. Cakes and crumbles, icecreams, fresh fruit, you name it. The hotel also has a nice garden for a short walk to let all the food digest a little bit. And the beach was near the hotel too.

Burgh Island by freya_heaven The Burgh Island is home to the wonderful art deco Burgh Island Hotel. The hotel, first built in the late 1800s was later renovated to the art deco building you can see today. They have a mermaid rock pool for you to swim in, A beautiful art deco interior & furnishings for you to admire, sauna, tennis court etc. All you would expect from a hotel of this level, their dress code is very smart to glamerous. A variety of famous people stayed here during its hay day including Agatha Christie, Amy Johnson, Winston Churchill, the Duke & Duchess of Windsor to name a few. At low tide it is possible to walk to the Island at high tide there is a huge tractor which takes you across. Rooms start at £260.00 per night

beverly Park Indoor Pool by freya_heaven We stayed here for 3 weeks in between houses, plus members of the leisure club. Great campsite which has won numerous awards. 3 pools, one indoor, with sauna, steam room & jacuzzi, childrens play area, crazy golf, restaurant & bar with nightly entertainment in the season. Internet access in the reception. Showers & Loos are kept very clean. They take tents, caravans, motor homes, plus they also have a range of their own static caravans for you to hire. Try to get a pitch or static with a sea view.

by JulesH This was apparently where the poet Shelly used to stay and is incredibly picturesque. The architecture in this little village lends itself perfectly to a chocolate box or picture postcard. This Inn has an excellent view of the boats bobbing in the harbour

Imperial Hotel by freya_heaven The Imperial is the only 5 star hotel south west of Bristol, not the most externally attractive of hotels especially considering it was built in 1866. Wonderful views over Tor Bay, streching over to Berry Head in Brixham. Everything & more you would expect from a 5* establishment is here, swimming pools, 24hour room service, babysitting, beautiful interior decor etc. The hotel does not have much land attached, but it does have a small private beach. They have two restaurants here, 1 formal & the other less so, I have eaten in both, very recommended.
