Definitely A Characterful Building

Good (3.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on July 9, 2014

Varley House certainly is a characterful building having been built at the turn of the 20th century as a rest home for returning Boer War officers. I only had a brief in-and-out one night stopover after arriving on the Oldenburg with an early-ish bus to catch the following morning but I should imagine this is an ideal base for a longer stay in the area.

The greeting on arrival was friendly and my single room, with its separate private bathroom, was more than adequate for my purposes with everything required including perfectly good Wi-Fi. I enjoyed a comfortable night's sleep, having had an excursion into town that evening, and breakfast was well worth getting up for.

My only niggle was that I arrived on a drizzly May evening and the 10 minute walk up the hill left me damp and sweaty. The heating had been turned off, which normally wouldn't worry me, but having changed into dry clothes to go out I got soaked again and so I ended up with two sets of damp clothes the following morning.

But otherwise everything else was fine, including the price.

Directions: From the harbour area follow the lane leading past Larkstone Park to the main road. Chambercombe Park Lane is a couple of minutes further on the right and the hotel is about 200 yards up the road.
