The Haldon Guest House: Yet Another Friendly Little Place!

In recent years whenever I've had to do city things in Exeter I've found it far cheaper to stay overnight in Torbay, rather than in the metropolis itself, and especially out-of-season when there are some great bargains to be had.

My criteria are quite simple: close to the railway station, inexpensive, free WiFi and ideally including breakfast.

This time round the Haldon was offering the best deal and so I thought I'd give it a try.

For value-for-money this turned out to be an excellent choice. All four of my criteria were more than adequately met. A major bonus was the unobtrusive friendliness of the owners, Fee and Mike, whilst everything else was pretty much spot-on.

My compact single room was thoughtfully laid-out, nicely decorated and spotlessly clean. Being the cheapest option the room wasn't ensuite but had a dedicated bathroom down the hall and a bathrobe was provided.

The quiet backstreet location, overlooking a small park, is ideal, a couple of minutes walk from the railway station and about the same down to the seafront. Another plus being that my favourite Paignton pub, Henry's is just down the road.

Breakfast was well worth getting up for and little touches such as the herb seasoning of the mushrooms noted - it made for an almost healthy fry-up!

Paignton Hotels, B&B's and Guest Houses: An Overview

Paignton has a good range of accommodations. Establishments range from little back street B&B's to 4-star full-service hotels and because the resort is family-orientated prices tend to be relatively inexpensive. In recent years I've found myself staying over in Paignton (and sometimes Torquay) when I've been travelling in and out of Exeter and needed an overnight stay - hotels here being half the price of their equivalents in the city.

Most of the accomodations are located in the area between the railwayline and the seafront with the more expensive ones overlooking the Esplanade and the cheaper ones on the back streets. Even in the middle of the season it should be possible to find a room for the night on spec and the local tourist office will be happy to assist.

For booking in advance there's plenty of websites, a couple of which I've listed below and my normal booking site, www.booking.com has a reasonable selection too (along with honest reviews).
