Plymouth Hoe - The Green at the End of the Tunnel

by johngayton

Whilst Plymouth city centre is very much a concrete behomoth, albeit with a few flower beds strewn around (in concrete pots of course!), it is only a 5 minute walk to the sea and the immaculate green of The Hoe overlooking Plymouth Sound. The Hoe is where Sir Francis Drake is reputed to have insisted on finishing his game of bowls before sailing out to engage the Spanish Armada in 1588, tho' I think the clubhouse has since been redeveloped!!

This is a great place just to sit (or lie) on the grass, or on one of the multitude of benches, and watch the activity on the water on a sunny afternoon, tho' perhaps not such a great place when the horizontal rain sweeps in in Winter. The green, which is upkept by the City Council Parks Department, is always immaculate and is dominated by the 72 foot upper stub of "Smeaton's Tower" which is one of the former Eddystone lighthouses, relocated here in 1884 after its original rock base was undermined by the sea.

The Royal Citadel

by johngayton

One of Plymouth's most imposing buildings, with its 70 foot-high walls, is its Citadel which was built on the instruction of Charles II between 1665-75 as a defence for the city and its harbour during the Dutch wars. The Citadel was constructed around the existing fortress and has been refortified several times over the years, most latterly as an anti-aircraft defence during World War II. The present-day fortress is the base for the 29 Commando Regiment, Royal Artillery and guided tours are available by prior arrangement during the summer months by contacting English Heritage (website below).

It's interesting to note that as well as the gun emplacements facing out over the Sound King Charles also had batteries placed overlooking the city which had been a strong supporter of Cromwell's Parliamentarians during the Civil War.

The Merlin's caves (or so they say)
Tintagel ajoins sharp cliffs, very violent waves. You can make out a cave in the cliff, a nice place for mixing potions, prepare spells, etc...
Well, it certainly feels that way. It takes only a little stretch to the imagination to travel back to King Arthur's time.

My New Poole Page!

by Raquelle

I am having to put my Poole page under Plymouth as Plymouth is the nearest city listed to Poole.
On the 08 October 2001 I went away for the week to Poole, Dorest in England. Poole is on the South coast of England close to Bournemouth. It is a small typically English seaside town. Poole has direct access to France and the Channel Islands thanks to Condor Ferries which sail their ships from here.
