Travel Tips for Plymouth

Sensible Ashtrays

by johngayton

Whilst we all deplore smoking in public places (says he very much toungue-in-cheek) we also really deplore litter. Plymouth is a very egalitarian sortof a place and so when the municipality commissioned these benches overlooking the harbour they realised they would get smokers using them and so built ashtrays into the bench design.

That's why I like Plymouth!

Nowhere near Plymouth, so well...

by Geoff_Wright

Nowhere near Plymouth, so well off the Beaten Path, is my house! We had two surprise VT visitors call in the other day. Here is a photo of myself, Sally (Linky Pinky from Kent), and Mary (Mary Golda). Sally's friend, Trish took the photo and has now joined VT as 'Trishywishy'. Trish lives in Southampton. When VT create all the promised new locations, I hope that there will be some in Cornwall, where I can redo my pages nearer to home!

A Dry Experience For A Rainy Day!

by johngayton

When the horizontal rain is being driven by the wind through the streets and alleys of the Barbican there's plenty of welcoming pubs to seek refuge in. However if you fancy a warming drink combined with something more educational then check out the tour itinerary for the Plymouth Gin Distillery.

This is housed in the former "Black Friars" monastery dating back to the 14th century, making it one of the oldest buildings in the city, and the Pilgrim Fathers are reputed to have stayed there on the night before they set sail for America. It became a distillery in 1793 and its gin has been in continuous production since then.

Guided tours are on offer for individuals and small groups (larger groups can arrange private tours) and timings for these, which vary according to the time of year, are posted in the entrance. The tours are interestingly presented giving the history of the distillery and sharing the secrets of what gives Plymouth Gin its distinctive flavour and of course you get a chance to sample the product at the end.

As well as the tour the distillery has an atmospheric, brasserie-style, restaurant which is open to the public and there's also a distillery shop where you can buy both the product and some very collectable souvenirs.

The south-westerly tip of...

by Pierre_Rouss

The south-westerly tip of Britain, known as West Penwith, houses several quoits (also called dolmens or cromlechs). The best preserved of all is Chûn Quoit, up on the open moorland.
The uphill walk is well worth while because this is perhaps the most visually satisfying of all the quoits.

Home !!
Lots of history. Architecture in the city centre sucks..the Nazi's bombed it all and in our haste to rebuild they threw up ugly, square buildings. Although there are a few decent buildings remaining such as the Merchants house (above)

The Barbican makes up for it, visit 'The Mayflower Steps' to see where the Pilgrim fathers departed from and take cruises around the harbour and up the Hamoaze to the Dockyard. Good nightlife here in the summer. Avoid the 'union street' area at night...it is littered with drunks and matelots (naval personnel) on shore leave..and making up for lost time.

Local areas to visit include Totnes, Exeter (for the Cathedral) and Dartmoor.
