Sidmouth FolkWeek
Sidmouth has hosted an annual folk festival since 1955. This began as a relatively low-key event run by the English Folk Dance and Song Society and grew into an international festival of music and crafts and appropriately renamed the Sidmouth International Festival in 1986.
It almost became a victim of its own success, attracting over 65,000 visitors during the course of the week but was unable to cover its costs. It had been funded, in part, by the local council but when this support was withdrawn the then promoters decided to pull out.
The 2005 event was organised on a slightly less ambitious scale by a diverse group of local citizens and organisations and renamed the Sidmouth FolkWeek.
This is still however the town's main annual event and runs during the end of July/ first week of August.
The 2011 festival promises over 600 events although the final programme will not be settled until July. There are various ticket options ranging from individual concerts up to inclusive tickets for the whole week and these go on sale sometime in May.
