Best Western Tiverton Hotel

 Best Western hotels are usually outside my budget, but this one offered a very good rate for a solo traveller at a bleak time of year. So I took advantage..

The hotel is situated just outside Tiverton town centre (about 10 minutes' walk) and is very easy to access from the M5 (one of my criteria). Whilst its location is not particularly scenic it is perfectly safe and fairly quiet (especially so if you have a room at the back, right next to the tiny River Lowman and looking out over open green space).

I had a whole triple room to myself. It was huge for one person, but is a good size for three, with two armchairs, a large hanging/storage space and a bathroom with tub and shower. A deep, hot bath is increasingly difficult to find in UK hotels and was much appreciated after a long drive and a few hours chilly wandering.

The bed was comfy, the room warm but not overheated (and the windows would open if required), the toiletries really rather nice. Both room and hotel were spotlessly clean and free wifi is available throughout (and works effectively).

Staff were pleasant and friendly and there is ample parking.

The hotel restaurant wasn't open when I visited (not surprisingly, as there were only 11 guests and it was New Year's Day) but there was a good choice of bar snacks. I chose the homemade fish pie, half-expecting something 'homemade' elsewhere...but what I was served certainly was made on the premises, with huge chunks of salmon and scallops (and, rather oddly, bits of 'crabstick') topped with a mound of mashed potato. Served with a side salad it made a reasonably-priced, filling and warming meal, although not one I could actually finish...too much to eat! :-)

If you're thinking of using Tiverton as a base for exploring this part of lovely Devon, or simply as an overnight stop on your way further south, then I do recommend the Best Western. Not only is it a really nice hotel but it also has the huge advantage of a 24-hour Tesco (well, except when I visited!) and Tesco petrol station just a couple of minutes' away. :-)
