More about Charterhouse

Great Guest House

by TripAdvisor Member Emie6363

A brilliant Guest House, we stay here for 2 nights and had a great time. We were made very welcome and the breakfast was lovely. Lots to see in the area, Cockington Village and Paington Zoo are a must! Will definitely be staying again!

Lovelly Dog Friendly Hotel

by TripAdvisor Member gillibobs29

Absolutely ideal hotel for doggy owners in Torquay. Our trip started with the warmest welcome we think we have ever received when arriving at a holiday destination. Marion showed us to our beautiful Garden room on the ground floor of the Charterhouse which, having been recently refurbished was very tastefully decorated with calm neutral tones. The room was perfect for us as it is one of the two dog-friendly rooms and within (literally) a dog-ball's throw of a lawn, (perfect for that pre-breakfast dog-wee) and even better just 150 yards from the Water Meadows, i.e. the start of Cockington Country Park. The breakfast that Marian provided was just lovely and tasty and the selection of fruits, bread, yoghurts and cereals was a great way to start the day. We can't wait to go back. Thank you Marion, you made Torquay a cuddly and friendly place to visit for us. Big Woofs from Peggy-Dog.

brilliant breakfasts

by TripAdvisor Member linda0899

The Charterhouses owners, Marion and Les Ward, are kind, friendly and give a warm welcome. Rooms were spotless, great facilities, a wonderful power shower and brilliant all-you can eat breakfasts. I would certainly stay there again.

Home from Home

by TripAdvisor Member alvorboy

Genuine warmth and friendliness in a home from home setting. Les and Marion do all and more to make everyone feel most welcome, achieving all of the above with the best breakfast ever. Well appointed rooms, delightful gardens and only a few paces from the seafront. This is the perfect place to stay while in Torquay, you will not be dissapointed. We came away well rested, well fed and a longing to return...can't praise it more than that! Stephen & Elaine Richardson - Portugal

Fantastic place !!!

by TripAdvisor Member sue777

This place is a must!!! We (2 adults, 2 girls aged 9,6) have just returned from a week here in a family suite and we could not fault the place!! The couple who run the place couldn't do any more to make you feel at home - nothing is too much trouble, they were wonderful with our girls, and really know the art of hospitality. The place is being done up room by room, and although our family suite hadn't been redecorated as yet (we knew this beforehand) it was perfectly good enough for what we needed, very clean, and cleaned daily too. We had 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms in our suite and paid £567 for the complete week which I would say is a bargain! The cooked breakfasts were first class with great local ingredients, as well as the usual cereals, fresh coffee, croissants, fesh breads etc - excellent! The gardens as well are beautiful for relaxing in, and the heated pool just perfect! We can't recommend this place enough!!

True home from home

by TripAdvisor Member LondonLin

Marian and Les give wonderful hospitality. We stayed in their very comfortable garden room. The hotel is spotless and the welcome we were given was second to none. Nothing is too much trouble and it truly is home from home. The breakfast is truly amazing. Highly recommend this lovely hotel with its lovely owners

What a great B&B!

by TripAdvisor Member parsonsathome

We took the children back again this year and have had another fantastic week. This B&B is PERFECT for a lovely English Seaside holiday. Close enough to Torquay to walk and far enough out to feel like you are in the country!
Marion and Les are THE most hospitable hoteliers I have ever come across and truely make everybody feel welcome and relaxed. Fantastic breakfasts, lovely cream teas and a great garden to relax in after a hard day at the beach! The children took advantage of the swimming pool every afternoon and with handy tips on local events and restaurants from Marion and Les we managed to keep them amused for a whole week without leaving Torbay. (they also enjoyed the plasma TV/Sky in the lounge). Some rooms have been upgraded since our last visit and they look great! We stayed in one of the family suites which was perfect - kids close but a nice door between you! Our room was clean, comfortable, had well stocked tea and coffee facilities, free WIFI and a colour TV. Fantastic value for money!
This hotel is a TRUE FIND and we will definitlely be going back soon.

Marion and Les provide a home fm home

Firstly apologies for delay in writing this review but where has the time gone.....
My wife took me to Torquay for a get away break during a difficult time in our life.....we needed to de-stress after problems at her work and my finishing 2nd tour in Afghanistan and her brother still serving in Iraq......
What a godsend Marion and Les turned out to be.....from the moment we arrived outside their lovely home we started to relax.
Having booked for 2 nights we soon found it, set off Cocklington Lane with it's own large carpark it looked lovely and inviting....

Marion made us feel welcome as soon as we walked in, showing us to our room and noticing it was a bit chilly she went and got us a heater for the room.....a lovely big bed which was pleasure to sleep in.....we didn't want to leave on the Sunday morning, and a large clean shower and toilet/washroom.

Only thing wrong was too much light in the room as my wife is a really light sleeper so woke up early.....sleep mask she brought soon helped though....

As for the food....well as everyone seems to have noticed it is excellent....could of eaten loads but tried to not look like a complete pig.....everything is sourced as locally as possible with lovely sausages and bacon.

We walked towards town and found a nice bar and a lovely wee tapas restaurant just past the overroad walkway on the way in. Marion also suggested the "Hole in the Wall" bar/restaurant. We had a fantastic meal their and enjoyed our evening in the bar afterwards.

Overall an excellent stay and if we get the chance we will definately go here again and recommend to our friends, I actually told my parents about it but they'd already booked somewhere else....their loss I'm afraid.

Comfortable & excellent service

by TripAdvisor Member GLP-1

My second stay at the Charterhouse and once again I was made to feel welcome by the owners. The room is always clean and fresh smelling and I love the breakfast. The house is within walking distance of the conference centre on one side and beautiful Cockington on the other. What I missed: more sunshine.

We booked this hotel through after reading the reviews on TripAdvisor for a 3 day break over easter-the room we booked was the superior en-suite and we were very pleased with it-it was newly decorated to a very high standard with beautiful seaviews and a double shower the kingsize bed was one of the most comfortable if not the most i have slept in on holiday and believe me we have slept in a few!! The hostess( Marion)was one of the most friendliest i have ever met and so was her husband(Les).Breakfast was freshly cooked every morning and was superb. The location was great too, close to the beach, bars and restaurants but yet far enough for a peaceful nights sleep. After reading this you might think i have been paid or that i have shares in the business but if i had a week of trying to think of any negatives then i would still be thinking!!We would definately stay at this hotel again if we decide to return to Torquay for another break.
