If you are looking for characterful accommodation around the Umberleigh/Barnstaple area then look no further than here at the Portsmouth Arms. This is pub B&B as it should be.
The rooms are individual, immaculately clean, service is always with a smile and the location is a superb taster of what North Devon has to offer.
People make places and it is the individuality of the pub's hosts that make the Portsmouth Arms a very special place. There's no formality, dogs and children are more than welcome and slightly mis-behaved adults will feel very comfortable in the proper pub atmosphere.
You'll get to meet convivial locals in the bar, enjoy the well-kept beers, eat heartily with home-cooked food and you can just generally chill-out for however long you want to stay.
As well as the B&B side the Portsmouth Arms is also welcoming to caravaners and RV'ers, plenty of parking and the toilet facilities are available 24/7.
The pub's back garden stretches (with a little poetic licence) to the banks of the salmon-fishable River Taw, and is stunning. There's great walks both along the river and up the hill to overlook the valley. If you are an early riser the walk up to Chittlehamholt can be particularly spectacular when you race the rising river mist against the dawn and if you are fast enough (and the weather conditions are right) you'll find yourself in the clear dawn sunlight with a lamb's wool of white slowly revealing the underlying green - that's a big WOW!
Then you go back downhill for a "praper" Devon breakfast and that's you set for the day and whatever else you want to do here in Devon.
You don't even have to drive to get here - the pub has its own railway station. Unfortunately not all the trains stop here - the second website below has details:
