South of England; friendly? laid back?
by seejai
Hey all
ive just signed up today after stumbling across VT on google..
anyway it seems like a wicked site, so many people from whatever area i look under.
i currently live in the west midlands (coventry) but want to meet more friendly people, and enjoy a more laid back way of living to how it is here
ive heard several people say how different people down south are; 'friendly' 'chatty' etc
probably starting to sound quite naive now but what the heck..
is this true then? i want to visit some of the biggish towns down south like Bristol, Brighton and Plymouth
cheers
Chris

Hi Chris, Welcome to VT and thanks for your email, I was getting round to replying, but will answer on here! As you have probably read on my Bristol page, I have always enjoyed my trips to this fascinating city, mainly due to the friendliness of its inhabitants.
My trips have mainly been for work, but I usually try to see something of the city at each visit. My most recent trip, I stayed over for a couple of days, and explored quite a bit of Bristol and Bath, and found so many different places. I hadn't realised before that Bristol had so many old buildings, and thoroughly enjoyed wandering around. I bought a couple of 'walking trail' leaflets from the tourist info, which made it more interesting. I've recently found that guided walking tours are a great way to find a bit more about a place, again tourist info or local whats on guides are very helpful. Theres a large student population here,so plenty of nightlife opportunities.
Bristol is quite a lively place, with plenty to see and do, and offers something for everyone.
Look forward to reading about your travels.
Best Wishes, Sue.

I used to live in Wyken in Cov, I was born in Bath, studied in Bristol, worked in Exeter, Kent, London pretty much all over the UK as far north as Aberdeen. In my opinion I´d do what I´ve done with my family....bugger off and leave the UK well alone!! Have fun!!

I live near Bournemouth. I wouldn't say it's overly laid back (although it's not highly strung either), but there is a fair amount of pretentiousness.
It's a great place on a warm day to be sitting outside the various bars with the buzzing atmosphere, if thats what you mean by laid back, albeit a few air kisses going on in the background.
But yeah, I suppose we are a friendly, chatty bunch (you better hope you don't come across my mum for example lol!), but most people are pretty nice.
The few times I have travelled North, I have come across some people that seemed cold to me...... unless thats just the norm and Bournemouth is that friendly!

Travel Tips for Bournemouth
Whatever You Want From A Beach...
by johngayton
...you'll find it here!
Bournemouth and its immediate neighbours of Poole and Boscombe front onto seven miles of golden sanded beaches which loop around the relatively sheltered bay. The area holds a total of eight prestigious Blue Flag awards which denote that the water quality is excellent, the facilities top notch and the beaches themselves clean and safe.
Different beach areas are set aside for differing uses, from just lolling in the sand to more energetic watersports such as surfing and kayaking. For surfers there is now the new artificial surf reef at Boscombe which was constructed to boost the existing surf.
Some of the beaches are dog-friendly whilst others are family-orientated and there are even smoke-free sections. Useful for families with young children is the LV=KIDZONE scheme where attendants issue free colour-coded wristbands for the children to wear. The colour of the wristband denotes the beach section that the parents are using and also gets the parents contact number written on it. So if the child gets lost it should be relatively easy to get it back (unless of course you switch off your phone and move to another beach section).
