Connaught Hotel

This delightful family owned hotel offers excellent facilities and service. The rooms are well fitted and comfortable. The food in the restaurant is extremely good and the public rooms are gracious and welcoming.
A special feature is the leisure centre which has a magnificent underground swimming pool with good sports and leisure facilities.
The hotel is close to the centre of town and its facilities. I thoroughly recommend it.

I've stayed in worse

Our twin room in the main building was clean and the beds were comfortable, albeit jammed together. The room was the smallest twin I have ever stayed in and you couldn't swing a mouse in the tiny ensuite facility with its 1970's loo and handbasin. The room decor was dingy with two prints on the wall that had faded into near invisibility. The best thing about the room was a pleasant view of the pool and a pretty creeper framing the windows.
Reception did their best but an under-trained newbie was on duty by herself on occasion. I tried to book dinner on the way in but was told they were full on that night and the following night , so we had to go out and find something which took a lot of walking. Breakfast was quite adequate but queues formed at the staffed service point. Why not self service?
Overall the hotel was tired-looking, service was not as good as expected and the cramped room was very overpriced. I would try somewhere else next time.
Disappointed

We arrived tired at 8o,clock to be told our room had been given to somebody else. The room we were given(55) is the smallest double I have ever stayed in. The bathroom was 1970's ,tiny and in dire need of refurbishment. Too claustrophobic to stay in and dry yourself but when you moved into the bedroom you hit the ceiling light when trying to get dressed. We should have asked for another room but when we arrived another couple were already arguing and were told the main hotel was fully booked. Dinner was very ordinary with little choice, I find it hard to believe it has a rosette for it's food. Breakfast was better but coffee by the cup and making your own toast is not what I would expect from a 3 star hotel.
Food good but rooms leave something to the imagination

Had a 2 night stay 2nd to 4th of December. We were in room 43 a Superior room, i would like to see a standard. Checking in was good. The room still smelt of cigarette smoke and the central heating was very poor. We wanted to eat in the hotel on the first night but had trouble trying to get a menu. It was the hotel staffs christmas party and I think they were trying to get people to eat else where. Needless
to say that staff were in short supply the next morning at breakfast.
The leisure faculties were very good 2 saunas, 2 steam rooms, a good size pool and a jacuzzi also 2 fitness rooms. Overall the hotel is in a good position for town and the seafront with the BIC only 5 mins walk away. I have stayed in better BW hotels and probably would not go
back to this one.
Great for Girlies

Every year my girlfriend and I tke a 3 day city "clubbing" break from the sometime stressful life of a working housewife. This year we chose the Connaught and we have already booked again for 2008! I agree with some of the reviews, if you are in the Lodge you really do not feel like you are in the hotel. Luckily we booked a superior room and whilst the bathroom was somewhat dated and the room itself a little tired we have no cause to complain, the balcony was an added extra we did not expect! Facilities and location were fantastic and perfect for what we needed. We have booked the same room again this year to ensure we don't go to the lodge!! If it helps the room is 47!!
