Shaftesbury - small southern town
"Things that you might not know about Shaftesbury."
I live in a small southern (southwestern really!) town - population of around 10,000 people - big proportion are elderly!! Dorest is one of the top places to retire to - low crime, warm(ish) weather, and beautiful scenery. The town of Shaftesbury has a couple of claims to fame - the first being that it is the place where the Hovis advert with the little lad riding his bike up a cobbled hill was filmed. So his Yorkshire accent is a con - sorry to disillusion anyone out there!!
Secondly King Alfred (if he existed!!) used to hang out in our town and there is a big tower constructed in his honour about 8 miles away.
Thirdly Shaftesbury is a Saxon hilltop town - very old and very high up!!
Fourthly - It's the town known as Shaston in Thomas Hardy books.
So it is a quaint town with not much in the way of kicking nightlife, but as a reasonably interesting little town with a few local history highlights then it is ok. Oh yeah it also ended up in a top 10 list of nicest places to live - shame I cant remember which list it was on - sorry - will amend when I can!!
