Travel Tips for Weymouth

Town Bridge

by lomi

The first bridge in Weymouth was built in 1594 and there have been at least six bridges until the current one was built and opened on the 4th of July 1930. Technically it is called "a bascule bridge" from the French word for seesaw, these open at one end and lift to one side (single leaf) or open in the middle and lift to both sides (double leaf).

This steel and concrete bridge now opens and closes several times a day, starting at 8.00 in the morning, to allow water traffic in and out of the marina. On one side of the bridge is Brewers Quay and the harbour and access to fishing boats and diving and on the other is the more commercial area with shops Hotels, Guest houses and restaurants.

In 16th century the area now known as Weymouth was once called Melcombe Regis and the area across the bridge was called Weymouth. There used to be a rope-hauled ferryboat between the two areas. There was much feuding between the them because of rights to the harbour fees, markets and so on, and in 1571, Elizabeth I granted a Royal Charter to unite them as one, and called it the Borough of Weymouth and Melcombe Regis.

Seaside town with an island

by Britannia2

This is a very interesting town - great English seaside but with a better feel to it than Bournemouth. Whereas Bournemouth has become a young persons town Weymouth has something for all ages. There is a real sense of history here - some Georgian buildings have stood the test of time well and the town is well laid out. It is the only town I can think of in the UK that has a seafront and harbour at the back of the town centre and this makes an interesting design of town.

"...........and Portland"

Portland is reached via a causeway from Upton just outside Weymouth. A large island that is unlike any other in England with one central main village that straddles the island.
The most interesting part is Portland Bill where the famous lighthouse can be found.

"A town with a great harbour"

The harbour is a working harbour with small coasters mixing with fishing vessles but mainly leisure craft including some great looking yachts. There are some wonderful houses around the harbour and some intersting looking pubs and cafes.
