Built in 1887 to mark the 50th year of Queen Victoria's reign, the clock was originally erected on a stone base on Weymouth sands and has never been moved. The paving from the promenade, which now surrounds it, was built in the 1920's.
One way in - One way out!
"Weymouth - fact file!!"
Weymouth is renowned for having the best sunshine record in England, even in winter. In January 2003 it still held the record for the sunniest January since records began. The climate during winter is generally mild with few frosts and even rarer, snow. While a few miles inland Dorchester can be covered in snow, Weymouth rarely sees it. While most people think of Bournemouth as having a good record for high temperatures in summer, Weymouth often beats it.
King George III made Weymouth into a fashionable holiday resort by his regular visits. He delighted in the sweep of the sandy bay, the peacefulness and of course bathing in Weymouth's (usually) calm and tranquil waters. He enjoyed his visits to Weymouth so much that he purchased Gloucester Lodge on the seafront to be his holiday home. Gloucester Lodge had been built by the Duke of Gloucester, brother of the King.
"Lets go fly a kite!!"
Weymouth has a great beach and every year holds The Weymouth international kite festival which is held every May. Even if you are not interested in kites to see the sheer number of these kites will take your breath away. Not to be confused with your kiddies tou kites these people take flying there kites extremely seriously and some of these kites must cost hundreds of pounds.
"The story of Doreen and Buck Buckland."
We went into Weymouth without first planning on where to stay so we headed for the local tourist information. I cant quite remember what the b&b was called but i will never forget the couple that run the place. I was greeted at the door by a beaming pleasant lady who had just been washing up - complete with her Marigolds on. "Good afternoon" she said "i am Doreen Buckland and this is my husband Buck" to which he introduced himself in a booming voice "Hi! i'm Buck, Buck Buckland" what a fantastic name - great people. I kept the business card for ages and everytime i opened my wallet and looked at it seeing there names would make me giggle!
