The best hotel in town

Certainly the best hotel - grand in name and in the old style. Very expensive, particularly if you want a room at the front overlooking the sea - well why would you bother to stay here if you looked out of the back?

Stay out of season, or any time that isn't a Friday or Saturday. For example, the rates on Sunday 13 September were exactly half those on Saturday 12 September. Book well in advance for best deals.

Unique Quality: Classic frontage.

RATHER GRAND!

The Grand Hotel has - along with the Metropole - been one of Brighton's leading hotels for the many years. It plays host to Prime Ministerial stays during political party conferences and was the scene of a famous IRA bomb attack in 1984 which removed a goodly amount of the hotel's frontage and nearly took Mrs Thatcher with it. Because of it's iced cake appearance it's always had a slight edge on it's rival but recent reports tend to suggest that this particular Grande Dame isn't looking as sprightly as she used to be. People have certainly had excellent stays but some others report a fall from grace and a slow decline from chic to ever so slightly shabby. Luxury is obviously still to be had here but perhaps it needs to try a tad harder in certain departments?

The main dining room is the King's Restaurant which serves both a la carte and fixed price menus. The current price (June 2008) of the latter being £23.50 for two courses and £29 for three. Traditional style dishes on offer include oxtail soup, beef and ale pie, and rhubarb and pear crumble and thick custard. The Victoria Bar and Lounge serves coffee, cream teas, sandwiches and in the evening becomes a cocktail serving piano bar.

After overdoing it at the restaurant you might wish to toddle - or waddle? - along to the hotel's own health Club with it's pool, saiuna, steamroom and array of treatments from facials to body massages. Then again, you could have another cream tea!

Unique Quality: The sea view couldn't be better...assuming your room has one!

Plush as you like hotel on the seafront.

I've not personally stayed in the grand, but friends have and say that it's excellent. I don't know too much about the cost either but trust my friends opinion and the fact that even from the outside it looks amazing. Central to virtually everything, the seafront, pier, shopping centre, Brighton centre arena etc. it's definately in a choice spot. For 5 star choice with 5 star service choose the grand, with only the Hilton next door looking anywhere near as good a choice for your money.

Unique Quality: The location is one of the best things about the grand. On Kings road, rite on the seafront, just down the road from the palace pier. Just a short walk from West street, which is home to many bars, clubs and other roads leading off it where restaurants and cafe's are found by the dozen. A little further is the theatre royal, royal pavillion and the pavillion gardens. A little further still and up into kemptown where there are cocktail bars and wine bars. Also not too far down the coast is Brighton marina, with a great choice of restaurants, bars, cinema, casino, bowlplex and designer clothes boutiques. Not forgetting the lanes, where you can literally find anything, from jewellery, to antiques, clothes, music stores, souvenirs etc. Another stand out feature is the old fashioned style to the building and the service you recieve.

More about De Vere Grand Brighton

Dreary

Inarguably the worst five star hotel I have ever stayed in. It is staggering to think that this place has been refurbished recently. Staff range from disinterested to competent to pleasant, but in a place this expensive I would expect all to be up to scratch. Rooms would not be out of place in a good three star. Our window frame was cracked. Bar area is poor, the tables in the non smoking section looked as if they'd been bought in the January MFI sale. Bed was extremely comfortable (hence two out of five). This is the second time we've stayed in an apprently good hotel in Brighton and been extremely disappointed. Avoid.

Not very comfortable

by A TripAdvisor Member

I stayed here for a weekend in February 2004 while house hunting. The hotel is quite beautiful from the outside and has great views of the beach. The reception and bar area are quite stunning and there it ends. The hotel is a conference hotel and so the room could well have been in a travel lodge – plain and drab, no style. The pool and Jacuzzi were more like a giant vat of chlorine and bleach (my swimming costume was actually bleached a shade lighter). Food was very poor, more like a little chef. All in all there are much better hotels to stay in Brighton for that money. This hotel is living off a name that it made a long long time ago. Give it a miss.

The Grand is the best

by A TripAdvisor Member

The Grand is a superb hotel - in the top rank worldwide. The rooms are beautiful, spacious and comfortable; the service is second to none - fast, efficient, friendly, professional. One feels very much at home in the hotel, but also conscious and appreciative of its luxury. I really hated leaving!

Great room, superb service

by A TripAdvisor Member

My wife and I stayed in The Grand for my sisters wedding in January, and had a wonderful stay - the room was lovely, breakfast was absolutely superb, and the staff were extremely helpful for our whole stay. Thankyou.

The Grand was Great

by A TripAdvisor Member

Went down to Brighton for a family wedding, stayed for two nights in the Grand. On the first morning boy was it stormy, how great was it to sit in the restaurant eating our breakfast watching the waves crashing and people battling the wind. My wife opted for the healthy option and I went for the full monty, everything was lovely. It just made the wedding that little bit special to stay here, room was spacious and bathroom was well stocked with niceties. The shops and lanes are just a few minutes away, you're right in the centre of everything.

Stayed in better 3 stars!

by TripAdvisor Member lozdunk

I stayed at the Grand on Saturday night - having first seen the Grand 20 yeasr ago (before it was bombed) I have always wanted to stay there - what a disappointment! I paid £140 for a room on the 5th floor that looked out on 3 walls. The room was small, the bathroom looked as though it hadn't been decorated for well over 10 years, with damp stained walls and a cheap and grubby shower curtain. Every time someone walked past the room, the floorboards creaked like mad - waking me up several times during the night - whatever else I expect from a 5 star hotel, I at least expect a quite night's sleep - the bathrobe provided was dirty, the mini bar contained crisps that were 7 months out of date (which I only discovered after eating half of them!); I asked for a room service menu twice and waited 20 minutes for it - being told by the telephonist that she was "only the telephonist" when I queried why it was taking so long; room service was fine although insufficient cutlery was supplied. At breakfast I was seated right next to the buffet area and felt as though I were in a rubgy scrum with hoards of people jostling for the food and the waiting staff not helping a great deal. I have stayed in 5 star hotels around the world, and this rates possibly a 3 star - what a shame, it must have been fabulous in its heyday.
