The grand Old lady

She may be a Grand old Lady, but she can still knock out a good tune.

The Grand, has been through a number of re-furbishments in it's life and is probably due another one now. Despite the introduction of such modern faddy things as running water the hotel still retains it's air of Victorian splendor. This is most evident when ascending the grand staircase, or taking afternoon tea in the restaurant overlooking the sea.

Despite it's long history, and equally impressive guest list, the most important historical fact about the grand will be missing from any site that encourages bookings. The grand was the scene for the attempted assination of Margaret Thather by the IRA. The attempt failed, but it created a gaping hole in the building and took several people with it.

Thankfully, the grand old lady exhibited the same qualities as the 'Iron Lady' herself and now stand resolute and proud once more as the premier hotel of Brighton. The same could not be said for Lady T.

More about The Granville Hotel

Romantic + fun!

by TripAdvisor Member Exiled_Angel

What a wonderful hotel! My boyfriend booked this themed hotel for my birthday last year, we stayed in the West Pier room the first night and the Marina room the second. The West Pier room had a romantic four poster bed with a sea view, and the standard corner bath and jacuzzi - I felt like a princess! The Marina room is so much fun we almost bought one of the beds for the house when we came home! This is ideally located for everything, and good fun to boot. We will return again and again.

Friendly & excellent last minute price

by TripAdvisor Member CaRoss

Stayed in a seaview room, the pavillion room. Lovely and clean and fresh. Jacuzzi bath, and all facilities which worked. Lift in the hotel which is not mentioned on the web page, so no long flights of stairs!! Hotel staff were wonderful, nothing was too much trouble and the breakfast was delicious, with several choices including vegan and vegetarian.
Only draw back was the noise, the hotel is on the busy main road, and although there is a form of double glazing, the wind still managed to blow through the windows and rattle the curtains! However i definately will be staying there again, hotel is near the shops, restaurants etc and is as good as The royal Pavillions which has been our regular haunt for years. One handy tip, if you leave your booking untill the last minute you will get a faboulous cheaper price! we paid 50 quid instead of the 145 recommended for the room, and BARTER!! we did :)

A bit faded

I stayed one night for work, and colleagues liked it a lot, but the 'style' is a bit frilly/cheesy for my taste. I thought the microwaved breakfast was really grim for the price. The website suggests something quite a bit better.

Would definitely not repeat.

by A TripAdvisor Member

We stayed at the Granville in December 2005 in one of the Seaview Doubles. When we arrived the weather was beautifully sunny and the promised view of the wrecked pier directly outside our window would have been excellent except it was obscured by all the condensation in between the glass in the double glazed windows. During the night we were woken up repeatedly by the drafty conditions. The curtains billowing even with the windows shut and even on max the central heating in the bedroom was tepid. The final touch to the whole experience was when we turned on jacuzzi and found hairs from past users streaming out. I did find the staff very friendly but as a whole I definitely would not repeat the experience.

Lovely stay

We stayed in the Balcony Room for 5 days over Christmas. Very chilled out atmosphere. We'd only been in the room half an hour before we were in the giant jacuzzi. Victorian four-poster bed very spacious and really comfy and views from room out to sea were just the tonic after a huge Christmas lunch in the restaurant downstairs. They were very thoughtful and had even handmade a cracker filled with pens and pictures for our daughter (she was the only child in for Christmas lunch). The meal was very reasonable and standard of food was excellent. Homemade soup followed by champagne sorbet with fresh strawberries in the bottom, then a huge helping of turkey with about a dozen types of veg, hotly pursued by the Christmas pud or chocolate & orange mousse. Unfortunately the restaurant was closed for the remainder of our stay which was a shame as prices are good and menu is varied, which you can also order for room service. All was great. Staff in restaurant and hotel very friendly and did everything to help whenever needed. Breakfast was amongst the best I've had in a hotel - wide choice from your full English (huge) to Eggs Benedict, Smoked Salmon & Scrambled Eggs on ciabatta, to kippers. We thorougly enjoyed our stay and would recommend it highly.

Great little hotel

by A TripAdvisor Member

My husband and I stayed at the Granville for a night as an early Christmas gift. The hotel is brilliantly located for all of Brighton's attractions but far enough away from the hustle and bustle. It is really nicely decorated inside and out and the restaurant is especially stylish. The guy at reception was kind enough to upgrade our room free of charge without us asking and having stayed at many other hotels in Brighton we were pleasantly surprised with what we got especially at their reasonable rates. As with most hotels there, the buildings are old and so creaky floorboards and rattling windows are to be expected really, but the room was beautifully decorated and the bathroom was really lovely, modernly stylish with lovely corner jacuzzi. Breakfast was wonderful and really ample. When we return to Brighton we will definitely stay at the Granville.

Friendly and good value

by TripAdvisor Member Hetties-mum

The Granville is in a good position on the front, next to the Hilton and opposite the old West Pier. Walking distance of cinema, restaurants and The Lanes. We had the Brunswick Suite on the ground floor, which has a small sitting room overlooking the sea. It's nice not to have to sit on the bed all the time. Great bathroom with large jacuzzi bath. Bedroom is small but big enough. The bed is a bit hard and could do with a thicker mattress. Good breakfast in the downstairs restaurant, and the bar is much nicer than it used to be. The staff are friendly and helpful. This was our third stay here, and it continues to improve.

Good location, excellent service.

I was able to book a room for a Saturday night only which was a bonus although at £175 not cheap. The hotel is right on the sea front and near to the Brighton Centre, also only minutes walk from the lanes. We stayed in the Noel Coward room which was lovely although the furniture was a bit naff. The room has a magnificent sea view which made up for it, and it was very quiet even on a Saturday night. The en suite bathroom was lovely and huge. I can't fault the staff - greeted with a smile and excellent service. The breakfast menu was varied and all freshly cooked, served in the lovely basement dining room. Overall I would recommend the hotel and would be tempted to stay again.

Excellent Hotel!

by TripAdvisor Member JamesP39

We stayed in the Brighton Rock Room, with its four-poster and huge jacuzzi, which is virtually in the bedroom (see the attached photos). The hotel has loads of character, with its creaky floor boards and winding stairs. It was really good to stay in a hotel where it felt like thought had been taken to make it different. Too many hotels turn out the same bland rooms, with the same bland decor - not here - this is Brighton!
The jacuzzi is marvelous, (with overhead shower) and we spent a long time in there with our wine. The bed was comfortable, and the room fine. The only downside of being right on the sea front is that it can be a bit noisey as late night revellers stagger back to their hotels, but I would not swap the sea view for anything! The sun pouring across the water was magical.
We ate in the restaurant in the hotel, which is also open to the public. The food was excellent in the evening, and the full English breakfast, the next morning, first class.
We could not fault the staff, who were very helpful, right from booking, to checking out - and we are definitely going to be staying at the Granville again in the future!
